“Again!”
The distinctive metallic sound of blade clashing against blade could be heard in the training grounds of the 2nd Division. Subdued ripples of spiritual pressure could be felt each time the two Zanpakuto’s collided. Raising her Zanpakuto above her shoulders, Miyamoto Setsuna parried the downwards cut. Raising the two petite hands higher up, she redirected the strike forcefully redirecting his blade harmlessly to her right, faint sparks visible as the edge of his Zanpakuto slid down her flat before she responded in kind, hacking downwards towards his now exposed flank. Sensing the incoming danger, without time to stop his daughter’s cleave he continued to move in the same direction he had been shown, coiling his body as her sprung forwards into s smooth shoulder roll barely avoiding the razor sharp attack, the swish of air on his back letting Miyamoto Ren know just how close it had been to drawing blood.
Setsuna however remained unrelenting in her blade work, a graceful fluidity in all her movements, malleable and flowing like water always allowing one move to smoothly transition into the next without pause. Seeing that her blade no longer would be following her target, she swiftly stopped her strike, checking forwards with her lead leg. Her left hand released its grip on the hilt and twisting her body she viciously thrust out with a piercing, penetrating strike aimed for the vitals whilst her father was recovering from his evasive manoeuvre.
Her Zanpakuto froze in place, her hand deadly still and steady. A satisfied smile gradually crept up on the corner of her glossy lips. Ren’s free hand rose up, his palm open. Feeling the tip of Setsuna’s blade ever so slightly pressed against the skin of his back, where his liver resided he could only raise his hand in defeat. “Your control is impeccable Setsuna.” He chuckled out loud before sheathing his Zanpakuto at his side. “You win, again. I’m proud of just how amazing my daughter is!” A rare, fully surfaced smile appeared on Setsuna’s face as she moved her Zanpakuto back, sheathing it in one deft motion. Hands in front of her she bowed once, a cheery expression on her face as she responded politely with her soft voice, happy to receive the compliment from her father. “Thank you Father. I owe it all to you.” Ren let out a hearty laugh and patted his daughter’s shoulder with a look of pride. “Thanks Tsuna but you don’t owe it to me. It’s your efforts that have allowed you to progress this far so soon in the way to of sword. I only gave you a nudge in the right direction here and there. You only have yourself to thank.”
A gentle blush rose of Setsuna’s cheeks. When it came to her father it was different. For the rest of her family her development and progression served as a tool to show them that they were wrong, they were mistaken about her and that she was worth more than the wastrel they treated her as, simply for the great sin of being born. They could only eat their words as she rose above them in both power and prestige. For her father though she wanted to repay him for his care, his sacrifice and for the love and affection he showered her with regardless of what the rest of their family thought. She would make him proud and show him that his daughter would rise above it all and shine brightly. That said perhaps not so brightly, Setsuna oh so hated being basked in the spotlight. Likely the negative light shone upon her all her life made it so she was exceedingly uncomfortable being the focus of attention regardless of whether it was for something positive or otherwise.
Their training session had gone on for just under an hour and they happily chatted about recent topics of interest in Seireitei for a short while after before Ren had to leave to attend to his regular duties. Setsuna however, remained free and was disposed to continue practicing on her own for the time being. Drawing her Zanpakuto again she began to methodically practice her swings on an invisible target in front of her.
“Guess we’ll go with the basics, Tsuna.”
