Alain was strolling through the forests outside of Karakura only a handful of days after the nighttime raid on the Lab Station Six. He would have preferred to have returned by now, but this was the way of things when part of a military organization, obligations and the like. Also, he had yet to attain the necessary status which would allow him complete autonomy. It was a most unfortunate state of affairs in which he currently found himself. Hell, he had even been forced to use a hollow breed as a temporary ally in order to get the job done. His peers probably would have taken issue with the decision which was why he never would have bothered to ask their opinion in the first place. Nor would he have asked for their assistance. Perhaps that was part of the problem. Though it didn’t matter now. Instead, he contented himself with the raid’s success. Maybe it wasn’t the unmitigated success that he had hoped for, but the enemy had been vanquished for the most part. The more disturbing takeaway was what he had found. Shinigami, Arrancar, Quincy and humans, working together as allies. What could bring such a diverse cast together? That answer had yet to be found and so he was back to continue his search.
It was going to take another five to ten minutes to reach the hidden entrance to the underground facility if he maintained his brisk walking pace. However, this wasn’t the problem. The issue came in the form of a human who happened to be in the nearby vicinity. Merrick had been tracking them since the entered the woods, but he was confident that they weren’t following him. Likewise, he had nothing to support a connection to the laboratory facility other than their present location. It made for rather flimsy evidence, but then Alain wasn’t one to ever believe in coincidences. In truth, their traversal through the forest had seemed entirely aimless and random, but why take the risk. He would lose nothing by questioning them except time and the potential rewards far exceeded the lost minutes or hours. Thus, he found a comfortable perch high in the branches of one of the larger trees and waited to see if the human would give themselves away. Completely suppressing his reiatsu was beyond his abilities, but his hard work had finally paid off. Detecting him on spiritual radar was now a very difficult task.
