Merrick hadn’t returned to the scene of the raid in order to satisfy a want. He came back to satisfy a need, the need to learn what had happened to his guardian and why. So at the end of the day, maybe he had just gotten one step closer. “Well, only time will tell.” After exiting the hallway, he found himself in the main structure of the compound once again. With the briefest glance to his surroundings, he made his way to the stairs, stopping just long enough to flip off the light switch. Whether the status of the lights would indicate if someone had been in the lab recently, he couldn’t say for certain, but “off” seemed like the smarter choice. Oh well. Then he ascended the stairs two at a time with Janus following behind at a quickened pace.
“Indeed. Something is coming.” The Shinigami were coming and he didn’t want to be there when they arrived. Would it have mattered if he waited on them? Probably not, but he didn’t want to explain the reason for his presence. It was already going to be annoying to deal with any questions following the interrogation of the prisoner that he had turned over to the Gotei. Why add to the headache if it could be avoided. However, there was a potential problem. Depending on the skill of the Shinigami present, tracking might be possible. So the sooner that he departed the area, the better. The question then became what to do with the human.
Once they had traveled a few feet from the entrance, he turned to Janus. “Alright. You have two options. I leave you here to deal with whatever is coming . . . or I take you far enough from this place that you will not be detected.” Normally, he would have left them without a second thought, but recent events changed his mind. There was the matter of the broken wrist, but that alone wouldn’t have swayed him. Rather, it was the possibility that he could make use of her again in the future. Whether she was entirely trustworthy was irrelevant at this point. There was simply less risk of human revealing sensitive information. Unlike his fellow Shinigami, who was she really going to tell. “Typically, I would ask for permission, but we do not have time to debate the decision and the choice seems obvious anyway.” Scooping up Janus in his arms, he propelled the pair away from the area in a burst of reiryoku.
