Business as Usual - First use of his unique healing tendrils.
Day to Day Grind - Routine check up which also discusses mundane methods of healing.
Medic! - Mending broken bones and the like after a sparring session.
Mystery Man or Woman? - Binds an Arrancar and tries to examine any subtle differences in their mental make-up.
Usage of the Skill
Merrick's first forays into medicine began nearly four decades prior to joining the ranks of the Shinigami. Precipitated by the illness and subsequent death of his surrogate guardian, her loss became the driving force behind this pursuit. After taking ill, he began to scour the Rukongai in search of any type of medical knowledge that he could get his hands on. Initially, this undertaking was meant to help cure his mother. Following her eventual demise, it became a way of honoring her. If he was able to cure the illness which killed her, then it would symbolize curing her. Unfortunately, he has yet to achieve success. So after decades of studying and learning mundane methods of healing, he had exhausted all options.
The next logical step was the Gotei and the vaults of knowledge which he had heard were expansive. After six years of hard work at the academy, Merrick graduated and joined Third Division where he would continue his medical studies and hone his skill as a kaido practitioner. Starting out as a general nurse, his path within Third Division changed after a meeting acting-Captain, Shigure Takanashi. He elevated Merrick to a position akin to a medic’s assistant where he was able gain experience using more advanced techniques like Yakushisho and limb restoration. Whereas previously, he had been limited to little more than the basic utility healing skill, Soushuji, a whole new world of kaido was opened to him. However, he never forgot about his original knowledge base, the mundane. Day to Day Grind harkens back to his roots with a discussion of natural medicine with an individual who holds similar interests.
Curious. Studious. Adaptable. These traits have played a large part in how Merrick works and thinks. By tinkering with the known, he has been able to alter established methods to better suit his purposes. The techniques of others are his playground and kaido is no different. The first of these personal creations is the unnamed “healing tendrils.” In-line with journeyman level skill, it was originally intended as a much stronger version of Soushuji, but more precise and thorough. Though this aspect of the technique remains unchanged, another use has been found. As part of his growing interest in the psychology of all beings, subtle manipulation of the healing tendrils has allowed a mental probing capability which he hopes to further develop.
Business as Usual is the first time that we see the use of his healing tendrils. In this thread, Merrick is called upon to examine a fellow Shinigami who is missing the last year of their memory. During his examination, he finds evidence of prior healing, but he has yet to develop a fascination with the subject of psychology. As such, he lacks sufficient knowledge for a better evaluation. This serves as one of the incidents which spurs greater interest in the topic.
Shortly after the events of Business as Usual, Merrick has a run-in with a tiny Arrancar while chasing the Cloaked & Hooded figure, an individual who has attacked him numerous times since becoming a Shinigami. They escape, but Alain is able to capture the Arrancar who he later learns is named Ai. In Mystery Man or Woman?, he seeks to discover and explore the differences between the hollow breed and Shinigami minds. It is an adequate first attempt, but his own thoughts are preoccupied with Cloaked & Hooded. Combined with Ai’s subsequent escape, he doesn’t have the time or knowledge for a more thorough assessment. Likewise, a single Arrancar isn't sufficient evidence to draw any conclusions about the hollow breed mind.
Medic! is a more routine example of his growing kaido expertise. In this case, the healing tendrils are employed in combination with a localized Yakushisho that encompasses only the damaged limb rather than the entire body. The healing tendrils act as internal finger extensions capable of setting bones while also mending larger scale injuries. Merrick is also shown having grown into his role as a full-fledged medic, speaking with the authority that the position entails.
Other Information
This is the one skill at present which is intended to reach Grand Master level. Merrick hopes to accomplish various degrees of mental manipulation (interrogation usage), harm through healing (kaido as a weapon), healing at a distance, combat healing (self and others), regeneration, etc.
