"Ah shit, why did I have to be the one to help out?" Yuudai was silently complaining to himself about the task he had been assigned. It wasn't particularly hard or anything. In fact, it was probably one of the easiest jobs he would get for a while. That said, helping test out something for the Third Division seemed... Boring? Yeah, boring. I don't understand why they don't test it out themselves.
Museihei shook his head. Perhaps it's some new weapon that they want someone with combat experience to test out. Yeah, I guess you're right. Besides that, they told me that I needed to transport it to the farthest skirts of the Rukongai... Wonder what it is. Yuudai, now curious, came upon the required meeting spot. He was told that he would be greeted by a person from the Third Division, but so far it looked like Yuudai was the only one here.
Awwww come on, don't do this to me. Is this a joke? I betcha someone set me up for this. Yuudai was irritated, but no matter what he had a task to do. Therefore, he must wait for whoever it was to show up... If they were even real. If he's not here in a half hour, then I'm...
Almost as if he had summoned forth the very person he had been speaking about, Yuudai quickly felt another presence coming up from behind him. His reflexes automatically drew Museihei and spun him around, his blade at the ready. He noticed that instead of a Hollow or Arrancar, it was a Shinigami. "Oh shit..." he muttered under his breath. Clearing his throat, Yuudai spoke loud and clear.
"Sorry about that. Reflexes got the better of me."

When Alain first learned that his superiors had ordered him to assist Fourth Division with the testing of one of their prototypes, he wasn’t pleased. Though given what he knew about their members, he could understand why they would want outside help. Excluding the Captain, they were nothing but a bunch of lab rats. No one would want watching their backs if and when the proverbial crap hit the fan and Merrick was no different. But after some thought, he began to see the assignment as an opportunity. Progress on his two underground laboratories had come to a screeching halt months ago. Now he would have the chance to start up his personal project again. If babysitting a Shinigami and a prototype was the cost, then he was more than willing to pay it. Thus, after informing his superiors at the hospital of his new orders, he began the trek to the deep outskirts. With any luck, the mission would be resolved in less than a week or two and he could focus on Amara.
Like his previous ventures into the Rukongai, the trip was an excellent way to practice his hoho techniques. He had grown much since those first days in the division. In fact, he barely felt any exertion at all when finally arriving at the designated meeting place. It had actually been tough to find which explained his delay. When one was this far into the Rukongai, landmarks of any kind were almost nonexistent. In any case, when he stepped into the clearing, he was welcomed by an armed Shinigami. Hmph. Twitchy fellow. His eyes quickly drifted down to the large, elliptical object resting on the ground. It must have been five or six feet long and then four or five feet along the other axes. Must have been a pain getting that out here. In any event, the sooner that they began, the sooner they would finish.
“I see that you are expecting trouble, but I am unlikely to be the cause. Let us simply proceed to the task at hand. Now then, I learned long ago not to make any assumptions, so I will tell you what I know. Like you, I was tasked to assist Fourth Division with one of their prototypes. It is some kind of automated drone turret intended to provide additional security in areas like the outer districts which not all Shinigami can reach easily and quickly.” Alain hadn’t been told anything about the Shinigami whom he was meeting, but he suspected that they were chosen for the first to participate in the first test. The latter part was little more than observation. Finally, if the prototype survived, then it would be returned to HQ. “Testing is two-fold. First, a little one on one with a Shinigami. Since nothing was mentioned about damage to the device, I imagine that some internal mechanism is constantly recording and transmitting data to Fourth Division. So nothing to worry about there. Second, we see if it can take down a hollow. That will be the time-consuming portion because I am not sensing any of the creatures nearby.” In order to purify a hollow, the drone must have employed some kind of kido, but he wasn't aware of any Third Division involvement. However, that was a question for another time. "Do you know how to activate the drone?"

The man did not introduce himself, simply went straight into the details of the mission. Straight to the point, huh? I don't mind that. The man continued on about the different parts of the mission that was to be involved. The first part seemed to be some sort of test of the drones strength, while the second seemed to depend on whether or not a Hollow could be found.
"Seems simple enough, although that latter part could prove troublesome if we aren't able to find ourselves a Hollow to test it out on." Perhaps the Hollow's will sense the presence of two powerful spiritual energies and wish to confront you to devour you. That's how you'll get a Hollow. Nice way of looking at it Museihei. Yuudai couldn't help but be sarcastic towards his Zanpakutō. He knew that Museihei had a point though.
The man asked if he knew how to turn on the drone, and Yuudai just looked at him with a neutral face. "Not really. If I did, I would have activated it by now. But, let's take a look. Shouldn't be too hard to find the instructions..." Yuudai immediately turned to the package that contained the drone in question. He kneeled in front of it, looking for any outside instructions. When there appeared to be none, he quickly grabbed a hold of the top of the crate and yanked it off.
It came off rather nicely, no splintering or anything of the sort. Inside, there was a drone that looked like one of those camera drones Yuudai had seen humans messing around with. This one, however, was a fair bit bigger than those and had what looked to be a sort of blaster on either side of it. Yuudai looked around inside the box until he found a set of instructions. Well, can't go too wrong with good ol' paper.
It took a bit of work but he was finally able to figure out how to activate the drone. With a flip of a switch, the drone came alive, rising out of the crate at a steady pace. Yuudai turned to look at the other Shinigami. "Well, I think that's it. The instructions have a few things that mention how to use the drone for testing, but I'll leave that to you since I'll probably be the guinea pig it fires at anyways."

“Regrettably, the lack of a Shinigami presence this far out, usually leads to a few hollows which have stumbled into Soul Society. That is good for us today, but bad for the surrounding populace.” If they had terrible luck, then they could always lug the drone to the human realm, but that would be a major hassle. So for the time being, Merrick would keep his fingers crossed that they find a hollow. “It should not be a problem. Even without instructions, I suspect that Fourth Division can and likely will take control. But I will check in order to be certain.” Reaching into his robes, Alain retrieved his denreishinki and sent a text message to the Research and Development Institute asking if they would be taking control of the drone or if the pair would be left to handle things on their own. “Alright. It looks like Fourth Division can take control of the drone, but only after its activation. However, they will be leaving things in our hands unless there is an emergency.”
After digging the drone out of the crate and locating the instructions, Merrick’s fellow Shinigami had the drone up and running. “I take it that you are a member of the Infantry Fighting Force? If that is the case, then I shall not stand in the way of your fun. I am more of a support player anyway.” Alain merely assumed that anyone from Fifth Division would jump at the chance to fight even if it was against a mechanical construct. Upon taking the hard copy constructions from his colleague, he walked over to the drone and opened a control panel on the side. “With these documents and the Fourth’s help, I can program the drone for a specific target. In this case, you. I can also program a specific duration. After said time has elapsed, the drone will return to standby mode and then we can issue a new set of commands for the subsequent hollow test. So, how long would you like to face off against this little toy? Ah, and you may call me Merrick.”

Yuudai listened intently to the man's explanation of the drone's capabilities. Makes sense that the drone could be controlled by the Fourth. That way they can give it specific commands if need be. After the explanation was over, the man said that he wouldn't get in the way of Yuudai's "fun time" with the drone. Yuudai grinned. I like this guy. "You know, I hate to fit the stereotype, but ya got me. I'm raring to go."
The man, who revealed his name to be Merrick, asked for how long Yuudai wished to fight the drone. He pondered this question for a decent amount of time. How long indeed... If I do it for too long, we'd just be wasting time and my energy. On the flip side though, if I don't do it for long enough then we don't get a good handle on its combat capabilities. Hmmm... How long do you think I should have him set it? Yuudai was directly asking his Zanpakutō, Museihei. I think it should be about 10 to 20 minutes. A normal battle should last that long, and any longer, while a potentiality, is very unlikely.
Yuudai, now confident in his answer looked up at Merrick. "I think you should set it for about 15 to 20 minutes. A normal battle would probably last about that long, and any longer would honestly be wasting our time." Yuudai grinned at the man, his eyes twinkling.
Yuudai turned and walked a good distance away from where the drone and Merrick were, stopping at around 20 feet away, or about 6 meters. He turned back towards his partner and the hunk of junk that was floating gently next to him. He readied his Zanpakutō in front of him, a grin constantly plastered on his face. "Oh and by the way, my name's Yuudai Takeshi, but you can just call me Yuudai."

Merrick wasn’t surprised. Individuals from Fifth Division never went off script. If you had met one member, then you had met them all. Yuudai fit the stereotype perfectly and said as much. When the conversation turned back to the duration of the test, the man said fifteen to twenty minutes would suffice. “Fifteen minutes it is.” Circling the drone slowly, Alain found the ocular sensor. Once he had it aimed directly at Yuudai, he returned to the control panel and programmed the battle bot to use the man as the sole target. Followed by an input of duration, the pair were more or less ready to get started. He pressed a button to close the open panel and backed away from the drone. “It is all yours.” Merrick was left with nothing to do, but observe and hope for a chance to see his colleague's zanpakuto release.
Alain neglected to mention the capabilities of the mechanical construct, but with good reason. He simply didn’t know. Neither Fourth Division or the instructions provided that information. In all likelihood, this was the Research and Development Institute’s way of obtaining as accurate a test result as possible. This would allow reliable simulation of a Shinigami meeting an unknown enemy on the field of battle. For any soldier worth their salt, this should be child’s play. And if Yuudai came up short, Alain would be there to pick up the pieces, either physically or with his kaido. So as he waited for the test to begin, the Third Division doctor briefly turned his attention to the next phase of the plan. Clearing his mind and focusing, he scanned the environment once again for spiritual energy emanations. No hollows . . . yet.

Yuudai waited patiently as his partner went around the drone, setting it up for remote combat practice. His eyes switched back and forth between the man and the drone, betraying his anxious thoughts. Why are you anxious? Are you nervous perhaps? I'm not nervous. I'm just... eagerly waiting. This didn't surprise Museihei, who simply smiled and rolled his eyes ever so slightly.
The drone finally whirred to life, and Yuudai prepared for a fight. The drone suddenly shot forward towards Yuudai, faster than he had anticipated. This surprised him but not enough for him to lose focus. He came up with his Zanpakutō as he dodged to the left, his body out of harms way while simultaneously swinging upwards toward the drone. It seemed like the machine was smarter than it looked though, because as Yuudai's sword came up towards it, it rolled out of the way to its left and quickly came to line its ocular lense up with Yuudai.
Yuudai wasn't expecting that, but leave it to those people in the Fourth Division to come up with a competent battle drone. He continued with an assault on the drone, opting to take a more offensive approach rather than a defensive approach. It worked well for a while, keeping the drone cornered for most of the battle, until the drone decided to attack almost as recklessly as Yuudai was. This prevented Yuudai's strategy from working any longer and forced him on the defensive.
This cycle of offensive and defensive switching happened during the rest of the fight, until at last the fifteen minutes was up. At this point, Yuudai was sweating and panting. He watche as the drone blinked a green light a few times before shutting down and returning gently to the ground.
Yuudai looked at his partner, who Yuudai wasn't sure had seen the whole thing or not. "Looks like she'll be a good asset to the Shinigami in the outer ring. I can't really say for certain whether she'll replace Shinigami, but it seems like she could definitely handle a Hollow around my level."

After Alain had finished setting up the drone’s programming, he walked away from the pending field of battle. Conducting a hasty scan of the environment, he found an overturned tree which would serve nicely as a makeshift stool. From his new vantage point, he sat with arms folded across his chest and observed the engagement of man versus machine. It was quickly apparent that the drone was an impressive piece of construction. Beginning with maneuverability, the 360 degree range of motion along each axis and anything between, reduced an opponent’s ability to predict where an attack would originate. On the defensive side, Fourth had managed to design some manner of armor which was capable of withstanding some of the strongest blows an unseated Shinigami could dish out. I will need to ask them about the material in the future. Finally, and this was both an offensive and defensive measure, was the bladed octopus-like arms. Eight in total, they could be extend and retract at will, attacking and defending in equal measure. The only disappointment was the two turrets on the top and bottom of the drone which never fired. Whether by design or a malfunction, Fourth wouldn’t have a complete set of test data without them. But frankly, it was their problem now.
Once the bout was finished, Merrick rose to his feet and rejoined Yuudai and the drone. “I do not believe that the expectation is to replace us. As I said earlier, it is most likely a measure to better secure the lawless outer districts and beyond.” However, he had to agree with the man’s other assessment. The drone should be an effective tool once all of the kinks had been worked out. “In any case, I still do not detect any hollows. As such, this is my plan. While reading through the manual, I noticed that the battle bot can be placed in patrol mode. But more importantly, we can establish the bounds of said patrol. So I will assign our current location as the starting point and first boundary. Next, I shall send it in a straight line into the deep outskirts. It will continue in that direction until encountering a hollow or similar threat, thus creating our second boundary. Normally, the drone would then take those two points and continuing moving back and forth on a loop, but since Fourth only needs a single hollow encounter, the drone is set to deactivate after the fight, win or lose. We simply need to keep pace with our sentry and retrieve it. Sound like a plan?”
Post by Yuudai Takeshi on Jan 20, 2018 22:03:06 GMT -5
Yuudai, who wiped the sweat away from his face as his partner spoke, nodded his agreement at various points. Seems like his plan is pretty well thought out. Yuudai looked at the man after Yuudai had finished wiping his face and listened as his partner told him the full extent of his plan. "Yeah, I think that sounds good. If we don't find any Hollow out in the field, well, tough shit."
Yuudai sighed, his eyes closed for just a second as he rolled his shoulder. "Alright, let's get this show on the road." He walked over to the drone, looking at it up and down. You know, this is a really nice piece of equipment. Those boys over at the Fourth Division sure know what they're doing huh? It's not like you actually know anything about how any of this works. Museihei smiled, a smile that was more mocking than honest. Screw you.
Yuudai looked around the drone, looking at the control panel that he had used to turn it on, looking for something to program it with. Finally, exasperated, he looked at his partner. "Ok, guess I'll let you take over from here." Yuudai moved away from the drone to allow his partner access to the drone.
Here's my latest post, sorry that it's kinda short. I think I'll let you have one more post. In that you can have input into what you want to happen and then with my post after that I'll cement what's happening.

The solution to their problem had been relatively simple, so it was no surprise when Yuudai agreed with Alain’s plan. The only delay was when the infantryman decided to try and program the drone himself. Stick with what you know. As soon as he moved out of the way, Merrick quickly had the battle robot up, running, and soaring away from the pair at a swift pace. “Indeed. Let us get moving.” After making certain that his zanpakuto was securely fastened by his sash, the Third Division doctor proceeded to follow at a jog. For nearly one hour, the Shinigami ventured deeper into the Rukongai. With each step that they took, Alain grew more and more bored by the inactivity. Eventually, he stopped in his tracks, letting the drone race even further into the outskirts. “I do not think that we will be able to complete Fourth’s second test. Agreed?” It had only been a little over sixty minutes, but Merrick had things to do and was finished wasting his time on chaperoning the drone and a colleague.
Before Yuudai could provide his opinion, the two heard a roar resonate throughout the countryside. Son of a bitch. Why hadn’t Alain sensed the beast until that moment? He focused intently on the reiatsu signature. It was now clear as day, having approached dangerously close without their knowledge. He silently berated himself for not noticing sooner. Fortunately, they wouldn’t be attacked completely without warning. In fact, the cry of defiance likely indicated that the drone had encountered the fiend. Perhaps Fourth deserved more credit than he had been willing to give. “Well, seems like we cannot end this venture just yet. Shall we go and see how the little device handles its intended target?” Merrick didn’t bother waiting for a response. He simply held the zanpakuto firmly against his hip with the left hand as he departed in a burst of reiryoku. Though mildly annoyed by his recent failing, he was curious to learn how the hollow had evaded their detection.

It only took a few seconds for Yuudai's partner to get the drone up and running, programming it to sentry mode. I do believe you slowed the group down with the fact that you tried to turn on the drone by yourself. Oh fuck off. It was true, but Yuudai didn't feel like taking any shit from his Zanpakutō.
The drone whirred to life and shot off, with his partner not far behind it. Yuudai followed suit, flash stepping behind his colleague, who was actually much quicker than Yuudai. Fuck me, I'm lagging behind. Yuudai shook his head and pushed the thought out of his head. There was no use in lamenting his own ability, he just had to keep up enough to make sure that he was with the drone.
As the drone continued on its journey for nearly an hour, Yuudai grew more and more bored. "Jesus Christ, you'd think there'd be something." Almost immediately after Yuudai said that his partner voiced an opinion that they might not be able to finish the Fourth's second task.
"Yeah, I think..." Yuudai was suddenly cut off by a roar that came from a distance away, where the drone had been headed and was currently at. Motherfucker. Well, guess you'll see some action after all.
Yuudai focused on the beast's signature and was able to get a good lock on the beast's signature after having done so. Damn, guess I really do need to work on my Reiatsu perception. I didn't even know it was there till it was practically on top of us.
Yuudai nodded in agreement to the statement his partner gave and quickly flash stepped in the direction of the roar. He came into a little clearing that was surrounded by gnarled trees. In front of him, the drone and the Hollow were already battling it out. It looked almost comical since the Hollow towered over even Yuudai by a good couple of feet. Bu the drone was somehow managing to keep its own, firing off Kidou blast after Kidou blast.
Yuudai watched, impressed by the spectacle. "Well, looks like our little friend is giving it a run for its money." Don't be too cocky. I don't think the drone will be able to hold up much longer. Yuudai watched the drone closely and, sure enough, it seemed to be firing Kidou blasts less and less frequently. Already out of juice? They really need to rethink their damn design.
Post by Alain Merrick on Jan 31, 2018 14:42:48 GMT -5
When the pair arrived on the scene, they found themselves standing at the edge of clearing. Circular in shape and surrounding by trees, the area had an artificial look in Alain’s opinion. Maybe the field had once served as a meeting place of some kind, but many years must have passed because the wilds had reasserted their dominance. While this overgrowth had no effect on the airborne drone, it may have had a hand in slowing down the hollow breed slightly. The beast was humanoid in shape and stood nine feet tall, but with gangly arms and legs that were too long for its torso. Likewise, the out of place length also extended to its fingers and toes. They must have been nearly a foot long and sharpened to fine points. A hasty of appraisal of the scratches and punctures on the drone’s surface were a clear indication of how well the appendages served the creature.
“Well, now we sit back and watch.” Not that he cared of course, but Fourth Division probably wouldn't have been pleased if they chose to intervene prematurely. Most of the time, it was unwise to play around with any enemy, but now that he stood in close proximity to the fiend, he was able to gauge the relative strength with greater accuracy. It would be no match for Merrick. Even Yuudai was likely to be a daunting obstacle. Then there was the fact that neither was alone. But first, it would need to defeat the battle drone.
His colleague was correct. The mechanical construct was performing reasonably well. The aspect which he found most interesting was the turrets. They had finally been brought online and were firing some manner of kido equivalent energy projectiles. Given his own inadequacy with the more destructive arts, he had never really seen anything quite so focused. Most hado spells had a tendency to target a wide area. This lack of precision was one of the reasons why he had never been interested in that class of spellcasting. Though that was a something which he could ponder at a later time. As he continued to observe the fight, he began to notice that the drone’s offensive capabilities seemed to be weakening. “It is looking like you will have another opportunity to flex your Fifth Division muscles. I could also provide assistance if you like, but I am a believer in non-interference.” Merrick was certain that the man would choose to act alone.
Post by Yuudai Takeshi on Feb 8, 2018 20:36:02 GMT -5
Yuudai watched the drone closely, his eyes following every move. It's definitely slowing down. Damn, that's disappointing. His partner noticed this too and commented that Yuudai would have a chance to flex his muscles again. Your partner is right. I thought you'd be jumping all over this. Well, I do want to fight some more... It's just disappointing that the drone isn't as powerful as I would have hoped. Would make patrolling areas like these a non-existent job for Shinigami.
Yuudai looked over at his partner, who was still watching the battle unfold. "I'll take him on myself. If for some reason I seem to be having trouble, I might need assistance." Yuudai looked back at the Hollow and felt its spiritual pressure. "Although, I think I'll be able to handle it myself quite easily."
He walked towards the battle, slowly but with a purpose that fit his massive frame. As he moved towards the battle, the Hollow finally landed a solid strike on the drone, crushing the side of the drone in. The drone fell to the ground and moved slightly, then stopped. It had reached its limit, and Yuudai came in to take its place.
Yuudai sized the Hollow up as it towered over Yuudai. It looked like it had taken quite a beating, most likely from the drone it had just been fighting. The Hollow panted heavily as Yuudai approached, and turned its head toward Yuudai as he stopped.
"Alright, let's do this." Almost as if in response, the Hollow roared, something primal and angry. Yuudai steadied himself and flash stepped towards the Hollow, his Zanpakutō slashing towards it as he did so. The Hollow blocked with his arm, which had hardened in response to Yuudai's attack. The Hollow then followed up with an attack of his own, a haymaker with its right arm that was coming towards Yuudai's side. Yuudai saw the attack and was able to slip backward, disengaging with his enemy so as to make the monster hit nothing but air.
Yuudai stood silent, his eyes focused on his enemy. You ready for this? Yes. Let's go. With that, Yuudai lunged once more.
Post by Alain Merrick on Feb 9, 2018 17:26:59 GMT -5
As Merrick suspected, Yuudai was eager to jump into the fray once more. “On your word.” Alain offered a small incline of the head, acknowledging that his colleague could take the lead at eliminating the hollow. Remaining near the perimeter of the clearing, the infantryman began a slow walk towards the target. At the same moment, the hollow landed a solid slash to the drone with its needle-like appendages. The unusual length allowed the sharpened fingers to penetrate the surface and suitably mangle its internal mechanisms, effectively killing the construction. It had been a good try, especially if this was Fourth Division’s first prototype. There was much that Alain liked about what they were attempting to do. In fact, he now had a few ideas of his own which he would strive to implement in his own projects in the future. In the meantime, he hoped that Yuudai would provide another learning opportunity.
“Is it wise to just stand back and watch?” A voice echoed in his head.
With the enemy already wounded, he would not need my assistance. Besides, the members of Fifth Division live to fight and fight alone. Why possible reason could he have to interfere. It wasn’t like he enjoyed fighting. For him, it was a last resort. Also, Alain didn’t see protecting others as part of his job description. Some may have seen it as ironic given his position within the Gotei, but then he never really fit into any common mold.
“People do not always know what they need.” Merrick couldn’t explain why, but this seemed like a jab at him rather than his fellow Shinigami.
Then they do not know themselves very well. This comment elicited a soft chuckle from Aleith’Sor, but he ignored it and returned his attention to the fight. Unsurprisingly, Takashi employed zanjutsu alone, though with some hoho mixed in. Kido was a no show, but then it had never been part of Fifth Division’s repertoire. As a result, there was little chance to observe something new. Instead, Merrick would have to rely on the hollow, hoping it could force Yuudai to use his Shikai.
Post by Yuudai Takeshi on Feb 13, 2018 0:00:18 GMT -5
Yuudai's thrust met the arm of his enemy, who had hardened the skin in response to Yuudai's predictable attack. What was not so predictable was Yuudai's quick movement that forced him in closer to the Hollow, his blade slicing up the side of the Hollow's arm as Yuudai moved inward. Yuudai had predicted that the Hollow had simply hardened the area around the part of the arm that Yuudai had originally struck, and had not, in fact, hardened the entirety of its arm.
Looks like I was right. The thought came as a spurt of blood came down upon Yuudai's robes, staining them a dark red. The air was filled with the sickly sweet smell of fresh blood, and the screams of the Hollow could likely be heard some distance away.
Yuudai turned his Zanpakutō into the beast's chest area, hoping to stab into the thing before it could react. Unfortunately, the creature was quick to recover from Yuudai's clever trick. It hardened its skin once more in the area that Yuudai was aiming. The Hollow, not one to be tricked again, quickly took its good arm to smack Yuudai back. The attack worked a little, causing Yuudai no damage as he reacted to bring his Zanpakutō up to block the strike. The force of the strike, however, did throw Yuudai back about 10 feet, putting distance between him and the Hollow.
Seems like this could take a while. You were never one to back down from a fight. A smirk came across Yuudai's face. Yeah, I guess you're right.
Yuudai stood staring at the beast, his breathing now starting to get a little heavier. Damn, I need to hit the gym more. You already go for six hours a day. Shut up.
The Hollow looked back at Yuudai, deciding what it should do next. It was in fairly bad shape, all things considered. Its arm was sliced up, and there were little chunks missing from it all around its body due to the Kido being blasted at it earlier.
There was a pause that seemed to last forever, and then, a scream. It came from the Hollow, and this scream was something Yuudai hadn't quite heard before. Think of the worst possible sound you could ever think of, mix it with the second worst sound, then multiply that by 10. That sound wouldn't even come close to the sound that emanated from the mouth of this Hollow.
Holy fuck! What is that? Yuudai winced in pain as the Hollow continued its scream. Yuudai knew that he would probably be deaf for a while after the scream ended, but he didn't really care all that much. The bigger issue was that he couldn't really move. Son of a... Yuudai willed his legs to move, but it seemed like they were stuck in quicksand. It seems that the auditory output is so loud from this thing that its overloading your brains input and output centers. Well shit.
Yuudai was annoyed, but not particularly worried. After all, he had something that could take care of this no problem. Loudly, Yuudai uttered a simple sentence, his voice clear and seemingly pushing away all the sound.
"Silence my enemies, Museihei."
A soft, yellow glow emanated from his Zanpakutō, which morphed into something akin to a fighters gauntlet. The glow started to dissipate, but not before it shot out faster than the mind could possibly process and struck the enemy in its vocal chords. Immediately, the scream stopped. The Hollow, which looked confused, tried once more to scream again, but no sound came out of the Hollows wide open mouth.
Yuudai smiled, raising his fist as a gauntlet with two long blades protruding from it rested upon his hand. "Alright, now let's get down me kicking your ass, shall we?"

Unable to find a suitable place to sit and observe the proceedings, Merrick was forced to unsheathe his zanpakuto and cut down a tree. After it fell to one side, the resulting stump made an acceptable chair albeit much too firm. What else could one expect in the wild. Returning the blade to its sheath, he folded his arms across his chest, sat, and watched. As he suspected, it wasn’t much of a fight. Yuudai was more than a match for his opponent, employing a competent mix of strength and speed. Likewise, Alain didn’t see any out of the ordinary techniques which needed to be filed in the personal data storage that was his mind. Nevertheless, it was rare to come across a hollow capable of exhibiting anything comparable to an Arrancar’s hierro. In this case, it was localized, but useful. I could envision adapting this. Perhaps a bakudo spell which creates a strong, thin-layered barrier that clings close to or on the surface of the skin.
Ever the thinker.
Well, you are either part of the solution or part of the problem and I do so like to solve problems. Merrick would even invent them where none existed, just to have something to do. The life of a Shinigami could be very boring after all.
Just when he thought that Yuudai was going to be hit, the Shinigami raised this blade to block an incoming backhand. Should you still be sitting around?
Why not. Look at the man’s face. Do you not see the glee? It is a foolish attitude to have in a combat situation, but that is Fifth Division. Besides, the hollow has injuries all over its body and Yuudai has not received a scratch. Then the beast unleashed a blood-curdling scream unlike any that he had heard from the maw of a hollow. When Merrick's eyes drifted to his colleague, they appeared to have been rendered immobile. Oh, interesting. In Merrick’s most recent hollow encounters, he had killed the monsters before they had a chance to exhibit any unique traits. This wasn’t ideal from a research perspective, but neither was he an idiot, which made the scream a rare treat.
You can join in now. Her insistence was annoying, but having to explain the loss of a Shinigami life would be even more annoying. Still, he tried to wait until the last possible moment to intervene and was rewarded for his patience. Yuudai could be heard uttering a release phrase, revealing his Shikai as katana morphed into a gauntlet with two thin blades. It was difficult to see from distance, but it appeared that an energy lashed out from the glove, striking the hollow in the neck, silencing it.
See. It is always necessary to exercise patience. Both Aleith’Sor and Josephine had taught him the virtue. However, his zanpakuto spirit also saw the need for moderation in all things, a lesson Alain had yet to grasp.

Yuudai smiled, and flash stepped towards the Hollow, his blade coming upward towards its chest. The Hollow, who was still stunned by the sheer fact that the man before him had completely shut down its scream, was unable to react in time. The blade pierced through the chest of the Hollow, then swiftly came back out. The Hollow let out a yell or would have had Yuudai's power not still been in effect. The net effect was something akin to watching a silent movie.
Yuudai, still on the offensive, then went to slice at the Hollows neck. A satisfying sound of flesh being torn from flesh came from the Hollow as the head came clean off. The body fell limp to the ground, spasmed, then quickly fell silent. Yuudai went over to the head, which was still locked in a scream, and broke the Hollows mask. It quickly began to dissipate, heading off to either the Seireitei or Hell.
Yuudai, who had blood spatters from the Hollow on him, turned back around to his partner. "See, that wasn't so hard." He began to walk to his companion, sheathing his blade as he came close. "I would say that the drone, while it will need some more work, is looking very promising. Hopefully, that thing will allow for us Shinigami to relax a little bit more." Yuudai laughed a little at this last bit, then quieted down.
He stood before his companion and bowed. "It was a pleasure to have done this with you." He quickly stood up and went to the drone, which was lying on the ground battered. "I'll take this back to the Fourth. You can leave at your leisure." He turned back around and waved good-bye. "Until we meet again." Without another word, he flash stepped off in the direction of the Fourth's headquarters.

Aleith’Sor had no reason to be concerned. After Yuudai released his zanpakuto, the hollow never stood a chance. A quick slash to the chest was followed by decapitation, all while using the enhanced movement and of his Shinigami hoho techniques. The entire display wound up being very disappointing from a duration perspective because it had denied Merrick the opportunity to properly assess the man’s Shikai ability. Clearly, there was a sound component or more accurately a lack of sound, evidenced by the monster’s inability to roar in defiance. However, anything else would have been pure conjecture on Alain’s part. Following the loss of sound, the hollow seemed to lose the will to fight altogether. On one hand, perhaps the beast was simply shocked. The trouble there was that it could have occurred naturally or Yuudai may have been manipulating their emotional state. Next, there could have been a paralytic or binding aspect, something literally holding the hollow in place. Dammit.
You could always ask, but I would not expect an answer. This was true, but most people were secretive when it came to their zanpakuto. Alain counted himself among that group. However, members of Fifth Division were often a different breed of Shinigami. Perhaps they were so arrogant to believe that they could overcome a foe even if the potential enemy knew what was coming. It was a foolish attitude to have and likely one which played a role in Fifth having the largest death toll among the Gotei. In any event, Merrick was pondering this query and others when the man returned to his side. Unfortunately, before he could get a word in, Yuudai had said goodbye and flash stepped from the area. The only positive was that the man had decided to take the destroyed back to Fourth Division headquarters. That was rather abrupt of him.
There is always next time. Aleith’Sor wasn’t wrong, but it required Yuudai not dying in the meantime which was no guarantee for infantry men and women. Well, such was life. Taking his colleague’s lead, Alain employed shunpo, but in a different direction. He wouldn’t be returning to Seireitei just yet.
