As a Shinigami of growing power, obtaining permission to enter the human realm would soon become increasingly difficult. This made resolving the matter with Josephine all the more pressing. After his recent encounter with Janus near Lab Station Six, he found a stack of documents detailing names, dates, times and other useful information which might prove vital to accomplishing his goal. The next step was an analysis of the data. Merrick needed to discover who was involved with Amara’s organization. He had done battle with a group comprised of Shinigami, Arrancar, Quincy and humans. While he doubted that the Gotei would have records on specific Quincy or humans, Shinigami and Arrancar were likely another matter. He would be able to cross reference his list of names with personnel records for Shinigami and in the case of the Arrancar, he suspected that Fourth Division would have some kind of data. So after days of scouring records, he had been able to identify almost half of the names on his list as either Shinigami or Arrancar. Everyone else must have been in the human or Quincy camp, but those names would be much harder to verify without help. The question was where to find it.
Merrick’s first thought was to find Janus again. As a spiritually aware human, she most likely knew others of her kind. They in turn would know others and so on. However, she would have to wait while he looked into another name on his list, Isaac Dean. Who they were, he had no idea, but the stolen documents also listed a day, a time and a location. Thus, Alain sat on the rooftop of Karakura Hospital at six in the evening on the twentieth of the month. Regrettably, the stolen records didn’t provide pictures. If Isaac was adept at suppressing his reiatsu, then he was going to be damn difficult to single out. Likewise, the Shinigami's presence could frighten him off. Thus, as soon as he found a comfortable seat atop the hospital, he used his reiryoku to bend light around his body, obscuring him from view to all but the most observant and sensitive. Then he waited for the arrival of a significant spiritual signature.
The wait lasted nearly two hours before a potential target appeared. It was a man in his fifties. They stood just shy of six foot and weighed around one hundred sixty pounds. His hair was close cropped and of a salt and pepper hue, the same holding true with his neatly trimmed beard. If this was Dean, then they felt weaker than Merrick. So unless they were suppressing their reiatsu, the man should pose no threat. As a result, the medic felt comfortable tailing him at a distance. The question was when to begin. Following him into the hospital was an option, but since there were no other spiritual entities of value in the area, Alain chose against it. Instead, he waited another twenty minutes while the man performed unknown business inside. Upon exiting the medical facility, Dean jumped in the driver’s seat of a two door sedan and departed the visitor’s parking lot. Forgoing the use of shunpo, Merrick hoped to avoid detection. He suppressed his reiatsu to the best of his ability and followed by leaps and bounds as the bakudo spell dissipated into nothingness.
A short drive later, the elderly gentleman turned into an empty field on the outskirts of Karakura. A signal? He flashed his lights twice and pulled to the side of the road where he exited the vehicle. Ten minutes passed and then he was joined by a second man who appeared out of the shadows. They huddled in conversation while leaning against the car. Alain was unable to hear, but also hesitant to approach closer because of the new arrival. Whoever this was, were they going to be a problem? Wanting to avoid any kind of two versus one scenario, he waited for the exchange to conclude. It lasted only a handful of minutes with one shaking their head and then the other. Disagreements were clear, but they remained cordial, finally shaking hands before parting company. This was the opportunity that the Shinigami had been waiting for, but he had lost sight of the second guy. Dammit.
