NPCs and Ranks
NPCs
The world of Bleach Gotei is far larger than its player characters. In order to better maintain a consistent and convincing setting, NPCs are used to fill critical positions when canonical vacancy is not desired. The role of the NPC when used as such is partially to breathe life into our setting, but primarily to maintain the status quo—giving player-characters the opportunity to change the world around them.
Site-canon NPCs are open to all for indirect use in their posts so long as whoever is maintaining the NPC in question is consulted beforehand, and threads for important events—such as taking over the NPC's rank—may also be requested (via PM or otherwise). Keep in mind that NPCs are often NPCs for a reason, and that those maintaining the NPC have the right to refuse the request to thread at their discretion (though refusal to thread does not prevent player characters from taking over the NPC's rank). The request to thread with an NPC is therefore best used sparingly.
A list of site-canon NPCs and those who maintain them can be found below.
Ranks
Bleach Gotei strives toward making as much as the world player-driven as possible. Naturally, in-character ranks are treated the same way, though considerations must be made for when suitable player characters to fill certain ranks or positions do not exist. As such, some ranks are left temporarily held by NPCs (or inactive characters treated as NPCs) or are left canonically vacant. Generally speaking, all ranks are attainable by player characters, and any character holding a rank that can appoint characters to the ranks beneath them is free to do so at their discretion.
However, if a role above a certain rank is vacant or held by an NPC, certain requirements must be met before it can be filled by a prospective player character:
The equivalent of Captain-Commander (such as King of Hueco Mundo or leader of the Quincy) requires Prestige and the equivalent of 12,000 GP, where each mastery counts for 500 GP.
A Captain-equivalent rank (such as the upper Espada or the Sternritter) requires the equivalent of 10,000 Total GP, where each release beyond first counts for 1,000 GP and each mastery counts for 500 GP.
A Lieutenant-equivalent rank (such as the lower Espada) requires the equivalent of 7,000 Total GP, where each release beyond first counts for 1,000 GP and each mastery counts for 500 GP.
Note! These requirements do not apply when the role can be granted by another player character, though caution is recommended—consider the in-character implications of having weaker characters fill canonically strong roles.
A vacant or NPC-held role can be filled by an eligible player-character via a simple request.
Characters holding one of the above positions whose players go inactive will be temporarily considered NPCs for as long as they remain in that position. Upon returning, the player will need to request their character back only if they still hold the position.
The templates for these requests can be found here.
