Reyla stood in the center of one of the training fields of the Kido Corps headquarters looking over her notes. At each end of the field stood one other shinigami, individuals she had managed to rope into her little experiment, even if they didn't seem all that comfortable with what they were doing.
Honestly, you'd think that they were the ones who would be standing still while allowing others to strike out at them, though I suppose I shouldn't be to harsh. They did agree to help after all, even if it was reluctantly.
The purpose of the exercise that Reyla had put together was to attempt to create a barrier that was fundamentally different than that created by her standard Bakudo, one that would allow for greater adaptability in a combat situation by allowing for direct manipulation of the spellform by the caster without requiring her to cast an entirely new instance of the spell. She had attempted to explain what she was doing to the two helping her, but she had given up halfway through when their eyes began to glaze. Again, beggars can't be choosers, but Reyla felt that she was really scraping the bottom of the barrel here with these shinigami. Bottom of the fifth division, and still using blank asauchi's, but still capable of swinging them and performing basic hado, so at least something she could work with.
With a gentle sigh and a shake of her head Reyla put her notes away, there hadn't really been much of a point in getting them out in the first place, she knew them by heart at this point anyway. The problem was that, while the math was sound, the execution of the spellforms was what was giving her problems.
"Alright boys, let's get back to work, are you two ready?"
Once the two shinigami had given her nods of affirmation she took a deep breath and began to chant,
"Oh spirits of wind and earth, light and dark,
Hear my plea to the uncaring sky,
From the sea of my soul bring forth a great light,
Let all bow before me, and let no strike stand against me,
Bakudo number 36, Kawa no Iwa!"
Suddenly a light blue light began to flow from the tip of Reyla's zanpakutou, dropping and hitting the ground like water as it began to build up in a dome around her. Reyla had deliberately slowed down the execution of the spell in order to maintain awareness of every element of the casting process. As soon as the barrier was complete the shinigami behind her leapt forwards, bringing his asauchi down towards her, only to be stopped by the sudden solidification of the watery barrier wherever his blade impacted it. The nature of the spell she had used was excellent for defending against physical attacks as it blocked specific points of force reactively, but the true test would begin as soon as the second shinigami joined in.
Just as she was thinking about this the first shinigami broke off his attack, and the second shinigami began to chant. Reyla didn't pay much attention to what the chant was, but rather focused on her own spell, changing it while it was still active, gradually making the whole thing more solid as the other shinigami finished their chant. Suddenly a great wave of flame rushed from the chanting shinigami and crashed down on her shield. It held for one, two, three-
With a crash the shield shattered, unable to hold up to the strain of trying to block force from so wide of an area. As both spells faded away Reyla inwardly cursed, she almost had it, maybe if she had tried, Reyla's train of thought stopped for a moment when she noticed someone watching them from a small distance away, another member of the third if she remembered correctly.
"Can I help you?"
