Rain spattered down like it wished to drown out the things that it fell upon, leaving behind its wet greasy sheen on all it touched. The cacophony of the drum beats of the drops on whatever it struck was enough to drown out most sounds and enough to deaden even the loudest of shrieks. In storms like this even spiritual beings grew soaked to their bones.
"Command this is Victoria," a female voice uttered in the dampness of the night. "Patrol route: Berlin is complete."
"Good job Victoria. Hold position in Berlin. Get some rest and begin your sweep again as soon as your able," the voice over the phone responded before a click ended the call.
Victoria, as she was called, had been assigned this city known as Berlin. Ancient as it was it was still nothing when compared to distant Rome. Then again, few currently inhabited cities were older. That didn't matter. What did was that Berlin was massive and required a constant presence from her kind. Something that was harder to do in the present time.
The sickness had torn them asunder. Countless lay dead and thus left them short of warm bodies to fill patrols with. Her division, the fifth, had spread its depleted ranks thin to cover as much ground as they could in the human world. Every able bodied person was deployed across the globe regardless of division or specialty. That included her.
Because of her experience in fighting alone and over all strength she'd been handed the Berlin route. That, however, didn't mean that it was any less tiring. It'd been at least three days since she'd arrived, everything was running together, since she'd been able to stop and rest. To make the circuit without having to engage and destroy the arch enemy would take just shy of twelve hours. Add in thorough sweeps of each grid square and numerous engagements with the hated beasts and it took much longer. She'd stopped facing the outer wall of some great structure. She'd not noticed as she'd come in for her landing having descended from several stories up. A weak smile crossed her face tugging at the tight scar on its right side. Her world was spinning slowly and her mind felt foggy. She'd taken some damage but it was mostly minor cuts and abrasions nothing to be overly worried about. She was just tired. At least, thats what she hoped it was.
She could feel her feet coming out from under her and she stumbled forward several paces. Twisting to protect her head she fell against the wall and slid to the ground leaving a streak of blood and grime. She smiled slightly again. This was as good a place as any for a nap. She'd just take a short one. Thirty minutes at tops.
