So now that the time skip has happened, I think it's about time to get down to business. I've decided to move all threads Kalen has been in thus far to a sort of prologue, and use the plague as a sort of inciting incident for his story. Meaning that this is the time where Kalen will start doing things that will truely have an impact on his character and the characters around him. With that being said, there are some things that will be required for this first arc to make sense in terms of storytelling.
When designing Kalen, I wanted him to be a character with a lot of potential but a very low self esteem. The intention was for him to be the sort of character archetype that doesn't know just how good he is. (I'm a little dissapointed in how this came across in my initial application, however I'm working on editing it so that this hopefully comes across a bit better). With that kind of personality, the plague event is going to have some very hevy implications.
For one: The last of Kalen's childhood friends are now dead. The ones who set him on this path and the ones who were really there for him are gone.
Second: Many of the people in his division are dead. Mostly the npcs that Kalen would have known.
And thrid: Possibly the most important part, Kalen was powerless to stop this from happening. He already felt usless before the plague. Now pretty much everyone he knew and cared about is dead and he's still here.
With those kinds of events happening, Kalen is defeated. He'd pretty much given up on everything, but can't bring himself to end it all. This has caused him to become quite irritable, especially when dealing with the sorry excuses for shinigami that are coming in. To see shinigami that are barely stronger than humans coming into his division and trying to replace the members that died, when Kalen barely got out of the academy himself, pisses him off to no end.
So with all that, what does Kalen need. What he needs for this first arc, this first thread in particular, is guidence. He needs a sort of friend/mentor figure outside of his zanpakuto to lean on. Someone to convince him to keep going and give him a reason to do so. This figure will need to be with Kalen for most, if not all, of his first arc. The untimate goal of this arc will to get Kalen over his low self esteem and pave the way for him to do bigger and better things.

As a side note, if anyone has a thread taking place during the plague that they think Kalen could/should be a part of (especially one centering around the fifth division) let me know. I'd love to have some threads about when everything is going to shit.
