Today was a good day. It was a calm day. There were birds singing in the trees, the sun shone brightly from a clear sky, water flowed through a small burbling creek as it wound it's way through grass and into the forest, and a gentle breeze blew through the grass. Days like these could be considered treasures, memories to hold close to your breast and treasure as they could help you through the darker times of life. All in all, it was a day that nearly anyone should be able to happily enjoy.
Reyla was not having a good day. Sure, the sun might be shining and the world of the living might seem utterly tranquil and at peace, but Reyla was feeling exasperated and annoyed. It had all started when she had gotten a missive that morning while she was on her way to her borrowed lab in the Fourth division headquarters to work on her research, and everything had seemingly gone downhill from there. The hell butterfly had informed her, in the disinterested term of the Shinigami in charge of such dispatches, that she was to report to the Senkaimon for transport into the world of the living where she and two others would be investigating a listening post that had gone mysteriously silent over the past few days, and of course one of the two people she would be working with just so happened to be one of the few people she really did not want to work with, Merrick. The doctor's refusal to read social cues, lack of concern for his peers, unwillingness to let a subject go, and his general apathy towards others had easily made him one of Reyla's least favorite people in the Seireitei.
Only one of though, as the other individual she was to be working with was quickly vying to join Merrick at the bottom of her estimation. The final member of their group was a man who appeared to be in his early twenties, though she was well aware that that could mean anything, and had only just graduated from the Academy. He hadn't even really been accepted to a squad yet, and was simply one of the many people filling the ranks of the fifth simply because they didn't have anywhere else to go yet. At first Reyla had had high hopes for the man, and after meeting him at the designated rendezvous point, and after seeing that Merrick wasn't yet there and still had nearly an hour before he could be considered late, she had decided to try and get to know him, and on finding out how green he was she had promptly offered to give him some instruction, an offer he gladly accepted, at first.
"No, that's not it. You need to focus on the form of the spell or else it will fizzle out, just like that." The man rolled his eyes at Reyla and she barely restrained the urge to grind her teeth in frustration. He had definitely been eager at first, but it quickly became apparent that he had expected Reyla to teach him how to do 'cool' spells, and he showed no interest whatsoever in mastering the basics, something that he barely even grasped in the first place.
As the spell form that she had tasked him with maintaining, literally the most simple barrier spell she knew, fizzled out once again she brought her hand up to her face and pinched the bridge of her nose, muttering under her breath, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually hope Merrick shows up soon, if for no other reason than to let us finally get started."
