Her mind had been made up a long time ago. Even before the plague had hit she knew the Second wasn't for her. So why was she still there? Why did she continue to let herself feel suffocated by the wooden walls that surrounded her? She always told everyone it was because the Second needed her in the time of crisis. There were so few people willing to hunt down the infected and bring them in. Or out right kill them if they had progressed too far. Really, only the cold hearts of the Second found themselves unwavering in the face of such a horrific battle.
Well, except for her. Their screams and pleas haunted her nightmares and followed her as she walked, silencing away the Spirit she had only recently met. The tender, loving child Aiko who had saved her life -- for better or for worse, it was hard to say right now.
Saya let out a low sigh as she stared at the transfer request in front of it. She already got pre-approved by the First Division member who had typed out the form initially. All she needed to do was sign and bring it to the acting Captain of the Fifth. There, she would have a simpler life of a rank-and-file grunt who only served as a walking, talking weapon. A place better fit for her, she decided.
So, why hadn't she signed it yet? The pen rested neatly between her thumb and index finger, ready to be pressed into the parchment at any given second. But her fingers trembled.
Giving up. The idea of throwing away everything she had done in the Second all because she had given up. Is that what she wanted?
She pressed the tip of the pen into the paper before her thoughts could distract her. Her name was just a few strokes. 鞘. She held the pen tightly against the paper even after she finished the final stroke, ink blotting the paper for a second or two before she exhaled and pulled it away. Carelessly, she tossed the pen and grabbed the paper. The corner wrinkled a bit from the strain her fingers caused, but she soon folded it into a small square two times over and stuffed it into her pocket.
Her chair screeched against the floor as she stood up.

There was no Captain of the Fifth, yet. The second in command served as the acting Captain assumedly until they gathered their strength and found someone worth holding the title. In a lot of ways, the stress of being the Fifth's Captain was more than any other Division. Earning unyielding respect from a bunch of nobodies with swords was something only a truly powerful warrior -- or truly charismatic woman -- could do. So, acting Captain Genki Ogawa was who they were stuck with.
Saya tapped the back of her knuckles against the door before her three or so times and then started to pull the paper from her pocket.
"Lieutenant Ogawa?" She called in that professional tone of hers that had only grown all the more strict in the past few years. "I'm here to file a Division transfer request. I just need your signature."
