Machie, The Lost One
Unseated
Personnel File
Age / Apparent Age: 88/20
Gender: Female
Height & Weight: 5’6”, 130lbs
Hair & Eye Color: Black & Brown
Positive Traits:
Curious --Machie enjoys learning; she reads about several topics and takes detailed notes on the interesting parts. Opportunities to discover new things and expand her horizons motivate Machie to come out of her shell and explore the world around her
Kind --Treating others with respect and goodwill is second nature to the feline shinigami. When the choice between helping someone and walking away is presented, Machie often opts to be helpful or offer support.
Pragmatic --Machie values utility and as such, tends to avoid things she deems frivolous. As a result, the woman owns very few things, keeping barely more than necessary. She is often quiet, choosing to talk when it’s necessary or to be polite instead of voicing her every thought
Sensitive--Her mind is often busy, entertaining connections between her observations and whatever she’s read. Machie tends to keep a running tab on the few meaningful interactions she has with other people, discovering their traits with more ease than most. Machie watches others carefully in order to assess their intentions and predict their behavior.
Negative Traits:
Hesitant --Machie tends to take a while to trust others, engage in relationships, or try new things if they stray too far from her comfort zone. This hinders her ability to make friends and discover new things, something the quiet woman occasionally regrets.
Shy --New people and new environments are stressful for Machie. She often avoids direct socialization in favor of observing from afar. When others approach her, Machie often finds herself at a loss for something meaningful to say.
Conciliatory --Conflict is also a major stressor for the feline woman. Rather than fight or stand up for herself, Machie would rather yield and retreat. Even in daily conversations, the shinigami will shut down rather than fully express her discontent. Regardless of how deeply she feels, Machie struggles to communicate negative feelings that go beyond flustered and moderate discomfort. Whether out of anxiety or annoyance, Machie tends to choose silence over communication. If she does speak up, it's most often to agree for the sake of ending the conflict.
Presumptuous --Machie is very confident in her ability to predict others after having time to assess their behavior. As such, she tends to rely on her initial impressions of other people, even when it could result in missing opportunities to learn more about them.
Doubtful --Machie has little faith in herself and her value as a soldier, family member, and person. She often underestimates herself, getting frustrated with her weakness while ignoring progress she makes. Despite trying her hardest to grow, it is a struggle for Machie to acknowledge her own successes and talents.

Physical Specifications
Physical Description: Machie is a dark skinned woman of average height and on the thin side. Her ribs show through her skin a bit, not that most people see her so exposed. Thin spindly limbs and a small bust are kept hidden beneath plain, loose clothing when the woman is out of uniform. Her clothes serve to hide and protect her from others' eyes, opinions, and judgement rather than a fashion statement.
Almond shaped, hazel eyes peer out of her heart shaped face, often half lidded. Her button nose and full lips help create a rather attractive face, but the dull expression she often wears is off putting in contrast. Her facial expressions are rarely obvious, often consisting of a twitching brow or a quirk of the mouth. The usual expression marring her earth-toned face, however, tends to range between placid and somewhat melancholy.
Machie wears her hair in several braids that brush her shoulders when left down, often opting to tie them up in a bun at the back of her head. When not bound in braids of some form, Machie's hair forms tiny, spring-like ringlets around her head.
Everything about Machie's demeanor makes her easy to overlook, forgettable. She speaks quietly and politely with little intonation, moves through crowds with graceful ease, and walks almost soundlessly. Though usually still, Machie tends to fidget when anxious.
Spiritual Description:
Machie’s feline features shine through when others take note of her spiritual presence. A faint, pleasant rumble can be heard by perceptive individuals. Often times, a pair of grey cat ears tipped with purple appear atop her head accompanied by a smooth tail that extends from the bottom of her spine. These more visual characteristics tend to show up most when Machie is concentrating or using reiatsu perception.
Psychological Profile
Personality:
Machie is a quiet person, choosing to save her words for when she has something relevant or important to say. When she first meets others, getting her to speak more than a few short phrases can be like pulling teeth. Despite her tendency towards silence, Machie is generally very formal and concerned with being polite. Even though Machie likes people, she prefers to observe from the background or afar as opposed to getting directly involved. Her curiosity and perceptiveness lead the dark skinned woman to pay close attention to others and use her observations to assess them with surprising speed.
The feline shinigami tends to pursue whatever has her interest in sporadic bursts, alternating between training, sleeping, meditation, and investigation intermittently. Machie rarely sleeps for more than four hours at a time, taking naps and rests throughout the day. The very early hours and god-awfully late are her favorite times of day because there are fewer people out and about, allowing her to roam more freely. Machie’s inconsistent schedule is interrupted frequently by missions, usually patrols or caring for the Hell Moths. Although the catlike woman likes to explore new places, she doesn’t take as many missions to Earth because it is more difficult for a low ranked shinigmi like her to get solo missions. When she does leave Soul Society, its more often than not for simple konsou missions or dispatching base hollows because Machie can do these missions by herself or with minimal backup.
Although withdrawn, once Machie starts to open up, others discover that she is quick witted and occasionally very affectionate. However, the more vulnerable and tender parts of the dark skinned woman’s personality have become far less visible due to the plague that ravaged Seiretei.
Watching people die around her induced fear and paranoia into Machie’s life. Although her relatively random schedule adjusted easily to the social and structural breakdown, the feline woman lost a lot of freedom. The sheer amount of work to be done and lack of people to do it stripped the woman of her free time. Although not entirely cold hearted, Machie can appear to be so because she greatly improved her mask of indifference. Fortunately, she is tired of being weak and alone, enough so that she is willing to reach out to others.

Zanpakutō File
Power:
Nasima emits disturbing energy and sounds when released, with varying affects. So far, Nasima's aura seems to cause symptoms of illness, which makes it difficult for opponents to focus when fighting Machie.
Zanpakutō:
Machie's zanpakutō takes the form of a tanto with a matte grey blade when it is sealed. The handle is wrapped with white silk and a small cat paw keychain dangles from the butt of the handle. Much like its owner, Nasima is unassuming albeit odd in appearance.
Released, Nasima transforms into an ominous chain whip with a white flag. The metal is shiny, unlike in her sealed form, and the chain affords Machie greater reach, about 1.5 meters (4.5 feet). While released, Nasima makes ominous sounds much like the groans of a hollow.
Zanpakutō Spirit:
In Machie’s mind, Nasima manifests herself as a grey housecat with subtle lilac stripes and purple ears. She spends most of her time silent, watching the feline shinigami without comment. Her most common activities include watching Machie, sleeping, and grooming herself. Initially, Nasima was very resistant to any attempts her shinigami made at communication. Machie persisted to no avail until one day, she indulged in a glass of warm milk, eliciting a comment from her elusive zanpakutō spirit. After discovering the feline spirit's love of warm things and dairy products, Machie proceeded to bribe her into giving a name. After getting what she wanted, however, Nasima made herself scarce once more leaving Machie to continue with the guessing games.
Inner World:
The world inside Machie's mind is represented by the interior of a house inspired by Spanish architecture. The light colored stucco walls contrast nicely with the tiled floor. The wooden and wicker furniture are simplistic, with comfortable cushions and bathed in a gentle, flickering light that emanates from the fireplace. Nasima tends to lay near the hearth or a sunny spot on the floor. Occasionally, she will take up residence in a chair adjacent to the fireplace with light brown cushions. Against the back wall stands a wide bookshelf occupied by a few books and scrolls although it, like Machie, is fairly empty.
Documented History
Origin:
Born to an African American World War I veteran and a Spanish civilian in 1930, Machie was destined to have an eventful life. The first five years of her life passed peacefully, allowing Machie to enjoy the love of her parents and siblings. The Spanish Civil War began when Machie was six, followed by the start of World War I three years later. Her father, of course, opposed Spain’s fascist government and support of Hitler; this gained their family few friends and they were forced to flee their homestead in favor of a rural area near the border of France. Unfortunately, changing locations did not shield them from the stress caused by the political unrest and rapidly expanding war. Machie’s father became more and more paranoid, often patrolling their small cottage and the land surrounding it in search of intruders or spies. One unfortunate night, Machie snuck out; she startled her father, who shot her before he realized who she was. The anxiety and lack of sleep had dulled his wits and as a result, Machie died at the tender age of twelve.
Machie woke up in the outer districts of Rukongai alone, and afraid. She lived on the streets and only managed to learn basic Japanese before a couple of thugs working for a human trafficking ring found her. The men kidnapped Machie with the intention of selling her into prostitution. They weren’t gentle with her, but they had the barest modicum of restraint, if only so they wouldn’t lose money by “damaging the merchandise”. Fortunately for Machie, a man by the name of Kenshi killed the thugs because he had personal problems with them. He allowed the girl he had inadvertently rescued to accompany him. Though not a particularly kind man, Kenshi was not stupid nor was he wasteful. He recognized the opportunity influence over a young and vulnerable soul could afford him. He trained and molded Machie until he deemed her capable of fending for herself.
Alone once more, Machie wandered Rukongai, evading capture using her wits and basic martial arts skills. She encountered a couple of child souls whom she adopted, empathizing with their vulnerability. After gaining two charges of her own, Machie worked to gain modest lodgings and basic necessities for herself and, more importantly, the two young souls she regarded as siblings. Focusing on rearing two younger souls did not entirely dim Machie’s natural curiosity. She would often watch shinigami passing through.
One day, Machie attempted to copy a sensory technique she had witnessed a shinigami using. The technique did not work properly and had repercussions that nearly killed the untrained young woman. Afterwards, Machie was unusually sensitive to reiatsu. She began to study in whatever free time she could manage.
The woman’s efforts did not go unnoticed; Kenshi returned with an offer Machie couldn’t refuse: he would care for the financial and physical needs of her younger siblings if she would enter the Academy. Selfless to a fault, Machie agreed. She was a diligent student and graduated after six years of studies and unlocked her shikai shortly after. During her time in the Gotei, Machie befriended a few of her fellow shinigami including a medic named Ren. Her maternal tendencies lead her to take on a mentee, a young man who had joined the ranks a few years after Machie. Unfortunately, when this younger shinigami unlocked his shikai, he used it to make Machie relive her kidnapping and envision what would have happened to her without Kenshi’s intervention. Her trust violated and traumas invoked, Machie began to struggle mentally, emotionally and physically.
Her recovery came too late, however. A particularly strong hollow infected her reiatsu and Machie was still too weak to master the void growing within her soul. She was consumed and became a hollow. The years she spent devouring souls and other hollows are lost. They came to an end when Machie was purified and subsequently returned to Rukongai to begin her life again. Machie remembered almost nothing of her past incarnation, and, wanting to rediscover who she was, went on a quest for traces of her previous life.
Machie returned to the Academy and graduated rather quickly, albeit near the middle of the class. Since her graduation, she has struggled to remember who she once was.
Rise to Power:
After waking up with in Rukongai with nothing but the knowledge that she had lost everything, Machie began to do some soul searching. She pursued knowledge with fervor, in hopes of rediscovering her identity and recovering relationships from her last incarnation. Her obsession with the past drove Machie to accept recruitment into the Academy because it felt vaguely familiar and to work towards re-joining the Gotei with near single minded focus. Although she retained unusually high spiritual pressure for a civilian and relearned the basics quickly, none of her memories were helpful for figuring out who she had once been.
Call to Action:
Machie intends to recover what she’s lost at any and all costs, even the possibility of learning a new life. However, her zanpakuto spirit isn’t so willing to watch Machie throw her new life away. Will Machie’s quest for identity end in failure, or will she get more than she expected?
