Machie walked quickly, with short yet efficient strides in an attempt to catch up to the man who had caught her attention. Most of her irritation with the training fiasco had worn off now that something piqued her curiosity --well, maybe not most, but at least now she felt more curious than agitated. Her threadbare robes swished around the female shinigami’s slim figure. There was more fabric swinging than there would have been five years ago; the plague had not been kind to her appetite nor her physique. Nevertheless, energy and fervor that she had lacked only moments before spurred the dark skinned woman forward.
“Kyojin-san!” she called out, hoping to catch his attention. Her legs picked up speed as she pursued the man who dared stand up to those stronger than himself, even when faced with their superior might.
Machie had been bitter in part because she felt so powerless. She envied Ruby’s strength and the way Victoria could demand respect so easily. Having their strength shoved in her face had been an unpleasant experience through and through. However, Kyojin hadn’t let that discourage him from speaking up when he felt Ruby was wrong. He’d stood up for himself and demanded they earn his respect. That was a sentiment Machie could understand and value.
Machie had done the opposite. She’d rolled over and waited to escape for fear of injury. She’d decided her weakness meant she didn’t have a voice and that more powerful people could walk all over her.
Now, the feline shinigami wanted to know what could cause a person to stand firm even when there was no logical reason to believe they wouldn’t be knocked over.
The dark skin woman steeled her resolve, what little of it she had. She would not be left in the dirt like that again. She needed to know how to stand tall like Kyojin had.
