Many Shinigami asked themselves one question over and over: would things ever be back to normal? A considerable time had passed since the official end of the plague. Well, since the quarantine had been lifted. Since then many Shinigami had struggled to make the Gotei the Gotei again. The failed attempt to get a little more military drill into the heads of some had been only one example. In hindsight the idea maybe hadn't been bad in itself, but as for example Kyojin and Victoria had expressed to varying degrees, it hadn't been the time or the right person to do it.
When the hell butterfly arrived Kyojin just enjoyed some off-duty-time. Meaning he was sitting with closed eyes in a bathhouse in the hot tub, as far away from any living soul as possible, and enjoying the calm. The gentle touch of the butterfly on his shoulder was barely recognisable, but still he openes his eyes.
A whispered message later and the big man knew he was on duty again. Strange how sometimes the own thoughts would forbode actual events. The message said no more and no less than that he was to go on a mission with the Third seat of the Fifth herself.
A while later, when Kyojin was dressed, equipped and ready, he stood waiting at one of the Seireitei gates. His hair was still wet.
Peculiar: the mission wouldn't bring them into the mortal realm. This time it was the Rukongai. As the informations had it several citizens of an outer Rukongai district hat vanished. And because of the fact tgat the Gotei had to let them thrive during the years if the plague it was always the first assumption when something happened. And so the first call went out to the Fighting Fifth to clean the mess up.
But maybe most peculiar was that Victoria herself was going on this mission with a non seated warrior. Were their ranks spread so thin that such an unequal pair had to go on duty together? Or was there some other motive?
He hadn't really seen Victoria much lately, though that wasn't very surprising. Everyone had a lot on their plates. It was hard even for friendships and more intimate relationships to stay in touch close enough. Victoria and him...she was a superior, someone he respected for her strength, among others. Aside from that...
Kyojin raised his head as a soft wind touched his face. The sky started to cloud over and there was a little chill creeping into the previous warm air. While most people would bemoan this, Kyojin welcomed it. He liked it cool and most times it felt much too warm for him.
When he felt a presence closing in he turned his gaze away from the clouds. If it was Victoria, he maybe would learn a little more about this assignment.
