BAYARD, ABEL
The Troubled One
The Troubled One
Personnel File
Age / Apparent Age: 20
Gender: Male
Height & Weight: 5'5", 125 lbs.
Hair & Eye Color: Black, Green
Positive Traits:
- Calm: Abel is not often one to 'blow up' in any given situation. However, most people would consider that an understatement. Many people that have met the man will all share one common consensus: he seems to not care about anything. Of course this is untrue. He isn't apathetic or careless. He simply is a man that understands that there is very little need to constantly be losing your head.
- Patient: This often goes hand in hand with a person of a very calm nature. Over the years, Abel has gained a level of patience that many people would compare to a saint. While he does have his moments of impatience, more often than not, Abel is a man that can spend hours trying and failing to teach someone something without any genuine change in mood between the start and end. Many people merely assume that this is either a side effect of his calm nature, or why he is as calm as he is.
- Observant/Analytical: As a result of his upbringing, Abel has become a person who is always looking out for things. Be they things that could bring harm to him in the world itself, or things that could be misleading about people. In a nutshell, many people consider Abel's observant and analytical tendencies as being a sign of paranoia or other negative things.
- Compassionate: The few people that know Abel's past would expect this aspect of his personality to be stunted. However, Abel is very much a compassionate person, tending to do what he can to help others who he feels need it. He will do this even if he has to make himself their enemy. He will stand in the way of people who need help, and will often force them to confront a negative aspect of themselves--if he believes that he can help them overcome it. His view of compassion is not only the definition of the word, but also a desire to be the force in a persons life that changes them for the better.
Negative Traits:
- Cynical: Abel has seen the worst that humanity can come to. He saw it every day within his own family. As such, it is very hard to convince Abel of things. This is actually part of the psychological damage he has gained from seeing what he has seen as a child. As such, skepticism tends to lie in his belief in people's motivations, and often makes him seem rather pessimistic. It is not the case. Rather, it is just the demons from his past continuing to haunt him.
- Morbid: While this does not come up as often as his Cynicism does, Abel is very much on the more morbid side of things when it comes to voicing his own inner thoughts. It is another of the demons from his past that haunt him. While he tries his best to come off as being normal to those around him, his mind is plagued with dark thoughts that he refuses to listen to. However, on occasion, those thoughts will come to see the light of day.
- Stubborn: Like many people, Abel can very much be stuck in his ways. Unfortunately, this interacts with his Cynicism to a degree where it makes it very hard for him to actually trust people. To that end, he keeps things very close to the vest when it comes to the non-average parts of his life, and actively sticks to his guns in his belief that people's motivations are not always what they say that they are.
- Blunt: Perhaps the most blatant negative aspect of Abel's personality, he is unflinchingly 'honest' in his interpretation of things. While he is capable of holding his tongue, his true opinions are unflinching, using the most precise words he can find to describe things. Of course, this also manifests as him being extremely to-the-point with things.
Loyalties: Himself.

Physical Specifications
Physical Description: At a glance, Abel looks much like any normal person would. His only defining features are his longer than average hair, and his glasses. Otherwise, he looks like a normal Japanese-American. Abel stands at five feet and five inches tall, making him rather short for his age, and leading people to sometimes accuse him of being a teenager. Admittedly, given his lack of any facial hair, and the unkempt nature of his wavy black hair, it is not completely unwarranted. As for his physical build, Abel is fairly slim, which makes him appear to be on the lanky side until he stands next to someone. Truthfully, he is rather physically fit, as most fullbringers are. As for attire, there is no consistent theme of what he wears. At least, not consciously. However, more often than not, he is seen wearing a dark hoodie, sweater, sweatshirt..whatever you want to call them.
This is usually worn over some light colored shirt that can have short or long sleeves, along with his typical attire being pants that are slightly baggy around the legs. the reasoning for this attire? There are things that people end up being ashamed of. For Abel, this takes on the form of a single, long scar that circles the majority of his left wrist, and appears rather jagged in terms of the way it healed. When he is not wearing some kind of coat, this is always covered by some kind of bangle. Most typically, this is a leather bangle made of several closely intertwined strips of leather. These tie into a small, silver ouroboros symbol that acts as the connecting point for the leather strips.
Spiritual Description: Like any spiritually aware being, Abel's spiritual energy has a distinct feel to it. As with all spiritual energy, there are three facets to Abel's spiritual energy. First, is its appearance. Many beings have a spiritual energy that takes on a single color. However, this is not the case with Abel. When his spiritual energy flares to life, it takes on the colors of a bruise. While there are many colors that can represent this, Abel's energy is an uncontrolled mix of dark blue and deep purple. The colors of a recently created bruise. Yet another reminder of the abuse he sustained as a child. As for how it appears when active, it seems to flow outward from him rather slowly..almost as if it is bleeding away from him. It is thick and viscous, appearing rather terrifying. When his spiritual energy flares to life, there is a sound not dissimilar to faint screams of pain, with that becoming a sort of background noise as he fights. For anyone that comes in contact with his Spiritual Energy, it would be a familiar feeling to anyone who has seen combat before. It feels similar to freshly spilled blood, with the warmth becoming more intense the more someone comes into contact with it.
Psychological Profile
Personality: Abel is a man that has been shaped by the difficulties of his life. From a young age, he faced abuse at the hands of his father, who had relapsed into his addiction to alcohol. For two years, this occurred. In living within such a horrific environment, Abel had to face the worst things humanity could do for two long years. This haunts him, even in his adulthood. While most people would trust the motivations of others, Abel is always questioning them, refusing to believe in 'basic human decency', or even in the idea of a 'just god'. And yet, is is this very refusal that plagues his mind. He has spent many a night in the years since his father's death contemplating dark topics. He rarely voices these thoughts. However, he often finds himself attracted to more morbid symbols and stories. In essence, his abuse turned him into a more morbid person.
Like most people who have become cynics, Abel is very stubborn when approached about his disbelief in the good of humanity. However, Abel has always been a bull headed person. In his childhood, this lead him to getting into many 'fights' with other children over various arguments. Fortunately, he has become more levelheaded as an adult. But..the more things change, the more they stay the same. While he is very aware of the spiritual world, and even has aspects of his life that are less than normal. And yet, he is very consistent in stating that he is 'completely normal'. While this is truly not the case, he will stand by that point as long as he feasibly can. His reason for standing behind this is simple.
He does not know the full extent of the order of the world. He has seen and encountered hollows, and even other people with powers similar to his own. But what he sees when looking at the bigger picture is complete chaos. As such, he has decided to try and bring order to at least his small part of the world for as long as he can. However, now we are diving too far into the negatives of this young man. We shall mention one more negative trait, and then we shall pay proper attention to the positive traits that he displays. Perhaps the most easily recognized of Abel's negative traits, he has retained the innocent bluntness of childhood. While he is no idiot and can very easily hold his tongue, Abel very often finds himself on people's bad sides because of the way he sees and calls out their actions. Because of this blunt attitude in terms of speaking to and interacting with others, he has become a very to-the-point type of person. Now, we have elaborated enough on his negative side.
Like most people, Abel has good traits to balance out the negative ones. This first trait is often interpreted as the opposite, however. Anyone who has interacted with this young man often states that he seems to care about very little. While his voice does carry emotion, it always seems dampened by an unmistakable aura of calm. His expression is often neutral. Combining this with the natural low tone of his voice, and it is easy to see why people would think this. However, it is when a problem is encountered that the true nature of this trait is revealed. In a crisis scenario, Abel is always far more calm than anyone would have any right to be. In fact, it is very rare that Abel ever loses his head.
Unfortunately, while this is a positive trait, it is yet another scar from his past. During the first year of his abuse, Abel was taught by force that acting like a child would bring harm his way. As such, he learned to toe a ludicrously strict line of behavior while around his father. He was not allowed to allow his emotions to run wild, and was forced into a state of perpetual forced calm, always being as silent as possible. Due to this, he learned to develop quite a bit of patience. As such, these two traits have combined together and have formed Abel into a person that seems to never feel anger. Of course, this is untrue. Abel merely has a long fuse before he finally 'blows up' on someone.
Another thing that has developed in Abel in a positive way is his observant nature. Unfortunately, it is yet another thing that has developed from his past. As a child, he had to always be on watch to try and keep himself from facing abuse. Eventually, this became part of his personality. Even after the passing of his father, Abel kept looking out for anything that could possibly harm him. At its worst, Abel was a teenager that was essentially paranoid about everything. However, over the years it has leveled out, making him merely someone who can catch on to many subtle facts.
With all of this talk of things that have happened because of his past, many people would assume that the events Abel went through would be doomed to be repeated by him. However, due to the short length of his abuse, this is not the case. Having spent only two years under the thumb of physical abuse, Abel has had years and years to recover. Years that he spent under the protection of a loving mother. Over this course of time, Abel became more compassionate. Like anyone with compassion and empathy, he attempts to do his best to help others when they need it. However, he does tend to take a sort of..eccentric path to it. He is willing to take a normal path to help others..and yet he is also willing to be the person standing in someone's path if he believes that he is capable of forcing them to face a negative aspect of themselves, and make themselves better. And with as long of a fuse and as patient of a person he is? That tends to lead to a very stubborn act of defiance to try and change other people for the better.

Fullbringer File
Fullbring, Force of Will: Every Fullbring is tied to an emotion. For Abel, this is no different. His fullbring is tied to the emotion of frustration. Primarily, this is his frustration at how often he has been powerless to stand up against the abuse that others have thrown his way, along with his own self-abuse. The item that this fullbring is bound to is the Ouroboros pendant that connects to the leather strips covering the scar on his left wrist. When Force of Will is activated, Abel's pendant glows in the same color as his Reiatsu before melting into his skin, giving his whole body a light glint when hit by light at certain angles. Force of Will's power is deceptively simple. While this Clad Type fullbring is active, Abel's body gathers and stores various amounts of damage dealt to him as strength, both mitigating the damage he takes, while enhancing what he can deal. At low ranks, the amount he can absorb is negligible. However, as his fullbring grows, so does the amount of damage he can absorb. The chart for absorption is as follows:
Beginner: Superficial wounds ignored
Novice: Up to four Menial wounds ignored per thread. May only affect the same wound once (IE cannot affect a wound that has been recovered)
Journeyman: Up to three Minor wounds ignored per thread. May only affect the same wound once
Expert: Up to two Moderate wounds ignored per thread. May only affect the same wound once.
*Note: Without approval from a thread partner, this fullbring only nullifies damage of various amounts, and does not boost his strength.
Weapon of Choice: Abel is decent with knives and small swords due to his training in various martial arts. However, as all of these are strictly illegal in Japan, he secretly carries around a series of smaller knives within the pockets of his summer clothes and winter jackets. When confronted about his decision to carry such illegal items, he states that they are there 'solely for intimidation'.
Documented History
Origin:
Born on the east coast of the United States, Abel has always known a little bit of chaos. After all, living in one of the most populated areas in one's country tends to lead to seeing things that most children probably shouldn't be seeing. In particular, Abel lived in New York City, in a small, two bedroom apartment with his family. They weren't the richest, but they weren't poor either. His mother worked nights as a waitress in one of the more upscale restaurants in town. Thanks to generous tipping, Abel's father didn't really need to work, as his mother was able to provide for all three of them. Unfortunately..that didn't mean that the building they lived in was a very good one.
But for a time, that seemed to not matter. Abel lived a normal life for six years. He went to school, made friends, and generally lived a normal life. All the while however, he was blissfully ignorant of something that was about to bring massive amounts of misfortune to his life. As the years passed, rent for every building in New York City kept getting higher and higher. While at first, it had been easy for Abel's family to get by..it was starting to get difficult. Particularly on Abel's father. He had agreed to search for a job. But..well. The market wasn't exactly kind to people who didn't already have a job. As the weeks passed, stress built further and further on his father's shoulders. Abel began hearing his parents argue at night, but he only ever made out their voices.
What the arguments were about however, was Abel's mother getting frustrated with her husband over his inability to find a job. Rent had increased, yes. But so had the cost of many other things. She was working overtime every night, and took on extra shifts for people who couldn't make it for a night, all to try and keep them stable. It was a massive source of stress for her. Unfortunately..things would eventually end up escalating. While he did argue with his wife, Abel's father did keep searching for a year. During that year however, he found himself haunted by a demon he thought he had conquered. It was a very large secret. Abel's father was an alcoholic. Once a week, Abel's parents went out, and claimed that they were going on a date. So once a week, he found himself being babysat. He never minded. Unfortunately..with the lack of money, and the intense amounts of stress being put on his shoulders..his father eventually broke.
It happened a few days after Abel's seventh birthday. His mother came home..and Abel was all alone, watching television. She asked him if he had seen his father, and he responded with 'daddy told me to sit here and watch TV, and that he'd be back in a few hours'. He didn't even look away from the TV upon saying it. But perhaps that had been for the best. That way he didn't see how his mother's face went pale, and how horrified she looked. She had quickly ushered Abel to bed, to attempt to protect him from what was going to happen when his father returned.
Normally, it would have been lucky that she arrived first. Unfortunately..she was not going to be the target of his father's drunken anger. Abel listened as things were knocked around, hearing heavy footsteps as his mother yelled at her husband for leaving Abel alone, and for going out and getting drunk after being sober for so long. He hadn't understood what it all meant at the time. He didn't learn until far later that his father had been an alcoholic for years, and that she had helped him get his sobriety back. That very year would have been the year he went for five years without touching a drink. However, Abel eventually heard very loud crashing, and heard something hit the ground. In his panic, he had rushed out to see what was going on..and saw his mother on the floor, crawling backwards away from his father as he turned around. She looked terrified of him, and he had a broken bottle in hand. As Abel asked what was going on, his father dropped the bottle..and whirled around, smacking Abel across the face.
That was the last thing that Abel remembered from that night. But it was by no means the last time it happened. It happened every day after that for the next two years. Abel was not the only victim..but he was sadly the primary one. During that time, he started to become more closed off, less friendly. His grades plummeted. And yet..he also became more well behaved than any of the children in his class, and his teachers praised his mother whenever she was around. They merely assumed that she was going above and beyond in her job as a mother. Neither of them bothered to correct any of them. This was a problem that they felt completely alone in having. There were domestic abuse shelters out there, sure. But Abel's mother was too afraid of what her husband would do if she tried calling any of them to even make the attempt.
In perhaps a most ironic twist, it was not a happy event that saved them from the tragedy that their lives had become. It was another tragedy that saved them from the one they were living in. On the fourth of July, Abel's father had been invited to a barbecue by an old college friend. He went alone..and never came back home. The next day, Abel and his mother found out that he and a friend had gotten far too drunk, and had attempted to drive home. He hadn't taken the family car. Rather..he tried to drive the friend home in his own car, as he was far more drunk than Abel's father had been. Sadly, both men died in a head on collision with another car. While neither of them were happy to hear the news, Abel actually did break down and cry.
His father had not treated him well..but he was still his father. The tears he cried that day were a combination of tears of relief that he wouldn't be living in such a scary household, and tears of grief over the loss of his father. They stayed in New York long enough to hold the funeral for his father. They allowed everyone to think that he was a good man..but they knew the truth. And so did Abel's grandparents. In the weeks leading up to the funeral, Abel's mother had called her own mother, and explained to her what all had happened. While it seemed like her mother had told her that very little good would come out of marrying a recovering alcoholic..she still offered her something. A chance to return home..get her son away from a place with such negative memories. She agreed to it.
So, mere days after the funeral of his father, Abel and his mother found themselves on a flight to Japan, with each of them intensely nervous. Abel's mother hadn't seen her family since they had decided to move back to Japan after she moved out, and Abel had only seen his grandparents on Christmas every year before his father's abuse started. Thankfully, Abel had very little to be worried about. His mother had raised him to speak both Japanese and English. When all three of them were home, English was spoken. However, on the rare occasions that it was just the two of them, they spoke exclusively Japanese, that way Abel could learn how to speak it, and could easily talk to his grandparents whenever they came over. They had been first generation immigrants, after all. So while they did speak English, they weren't exactly fluent in it. So when he did join into a new school, he was able to easily converse with the other students and chat with them.
Sadly, he was still left alone more often than not as a younger child. Sure, he was put in classes with a healthier mix of children returning from abroad and foreign students than most classes were..but more often than not, people went out of their way to avoid him. It wasn't that he was aggressive. In fact, it was the complete opposite. He was the least aggressive student in his class. In truth, it was more that he was eerily quiet and foreign. He had it explained to him when he first attended a Japanese school that even if he spoke the language, many people would have ideas of what he would be like ahead of time, and that he would have to prove to not be like the stereotype most students held about 'foreigners'. Eventually, he managed to make a small group of friends with a wide variety of interests. The thing that caused this? He had decided on a whim to join his school's martial arts club. A club that primarily focused on Taekwondo, but taught all other kinds of martial arts, which attracted a massive variety of people. This made it easier for him to make friends, as he had something in common with some of these people. For the first time in many years, he felt..normal.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said for his home life. While on the surface he seemed to live a fairly average life, sharing a home on the outskirts of his mother's hometown, things were not exactly ideal. Strange things happened on occasion. Dead birds appearing around the yard out of nowhere, sudden cold sensations running up and down the spine in random rooms of the house, and many other phenomena. It was all rather strange. But Abel eventually discovered something a little more curious than it was strange. Abel and his mother were preparing for the day as usual. And yet, when his mother went to switch into her work clothes, Abel noticed a series of scars that wrapped around her entire stomach. When he asked her about it, she claimed that she had 'always had them'. At first, it seemed reasonable. After all, he had attempted suicide when he was younger. The difficulty of adjusting to the customs of an entirely new country, combined with the abuse he had faced, and the loss of his friends? It made his life seem like one massive waste of time. So, one night he took a knife from the kitchen..and dragged it across his left wrist. His attempt had failed, of course. But there was a scar left behind. A reminder of his attempt. Once the wound had healed, he took to wearing bracelets on that arm. Several had come and gone, but he quickly found a piece of a necklace in his grandmother's room. It was interesting.
A silver snake, eating its own tail. It was a small pendant, and when he had asked his grandmother about it, she explained that it was a symbol of cycles. She knew why he had wanted it. After a few hours, a new bracelet was made for him, with leather straps covering the scar. That had happened when he was far younger. But the scar remained the same size, expanding with his growing wrist. As such, the bracelet grew with him. And yet..in a single day, things became far stranger.
Rise to Power:
One night, out of nowhere..he heard crying outside of his house. The noise wasn't loud..but it was enough for him to hear it. He looked throughout the small house, and saw that everyone else was entirely asleep. But he could still hear the crying. So, he started looking throughout the house. After about five minutes of searching, it became apparent that the crying noise was coming from the backyard. Strange..if he could hear it in his room..why hadn't his mother woken up? She was the one who's room was closest to the backyard. So, without really hesitating, he unlocked the back door..and saw the single most eerie thing he had seen up to that point. A girl..that he could see through. Curled up under the small tree in the backyard. She was the source of the crying sound. Without saying a word, he walked over to her, and sat down. She continued to cry for several moments before finally noticing Abel. She explained that she had gotten lost..that this wasn't where she normally should have been. Abel listened, and eventually the girl figured out where exactly she was, and thanked her companion for listening.
Abel merely blinked and remained silent as the spirit stood up..and then vanished. With that, he walked back into his room..and went to bed. When he woke up the next morning, he merely thought it a strange dream. And yet..something was nagging in the back of his mind. If it was just a dream, then why did it feel like a new memory? And on top of that..why was he suddenly very acutely aware of all the air around him? And the ground? And anything he came into contact with? All day, he struggled to pay attention to what was going on in class. He was trying to focus..but this new hyper-awareness felt..strange. When his feet were touching the floor, he was acutely aware of everything in a room..almost like it was some kind of sonar. But..that was crazy. That being said, he went through his day as best he could. It was the last day of the school week after all, and he hadn't made any plans beforehand. As he made the instinctive walk home, he thought about what was going on.
As he thought, his mind became more focused. And he started to feel something..different about the world around him. Everything seemed more..vibrant. Alive even. As he arrived back at home, a thought dawned into his head. Maybe..touch something, and see what happens. So, when he walked into the backyard of his home..he jumped. And the result? He flew up into the air like he had just bounced off of a trampoline. He scrambled as he flew through the air..only for his fingers to find purchase on..thin air. He was holding himself in the air, a full three feet off of the ground..by holding onto the air like it was as physical as a wall. Over the next few weeks, he found himself testing the capabilities of what he could do more and more. What he found was that he could change the way anything that came into physical contact with him worked. Air could become solid..liquid could support his weight, ground could become flexible. It was like he could bend the laws of reality. After that day, he began to see more and more 'ghosts' like the girl that he found on that fateful night.
Unfortunately, he couldn't do anything to help them. However, he did occasionally find himself chatting with them, attempting to help ease the sadness of the ones that still seemed sane, while merely keeping the ones who seemed a little lost away from himself. All the while, he said nothing to anyone, and didn't even attempt to show his power. After all..he was only thirteen. He didn't need people having a reason to judge him again.
Call to Action:
And for several years, that seemed to be enough. He practiced with his abilities a little every day. They became more and more normal to him. And eventually, even talking to spirits became normal, and something his family knew about. They merely assumed that he had discovered part of the practice of Shintoism on his own, and gave him all the materials needed to pray for the spirits of the departed. Of course, he never used them. He understood that he couldn't do anything to fix their problems. Four years passed, and Abel eventually graduated from high school, while also having money saved up from the four years of a part time job he had worked. With the money he saved, he found his own home. A home in a larger town. Karakura Town. He was finally away from the judgmental view he had gained from the more popular and well known students. To them, he was still just a foreigner. He spoke the language, and looked the part..but he was not born in Japan. Add to that his reputation as an intelligent student..and many of them were rather harsh to Abel, picking up the cycle of abuse where it had left off. Thankfully, it was to nowhere near as large a degree. He was able to withstand it. But..the actions taken by those more popular students had cemented his decision. His mother and grandparents still lived together, but he would make it out on his own.
Unfortunately, however..moving to Karakura Town left him with little choice in how normal he could be. His father's abuse had damaged many parts of Abel's life. His faith in people. His trust. His innocence. But it had not stolen his compassion. Over the course of several years in Karakura Town, Abel found himself using his powers from a distance to stop any crimes he came across. Robbers attempting to break into a house? A simple tap of the building, and suddenly the building's front would shoot outwards in such a way that would scare them off. A mugging? Tap the ground with his foot, and suddenly they found themselves on the floor. They were subtle changes. But they helped people. He still didn't know where this power had come from..but he understood how useful it was. For about a year after his graduation, that became the norm.
And then..something horrific happened. Abel was ambushed. But not by a human. No..he was not so lucky. Instead, he heard a haunting scream echo throughout the night. One that made his blood curdle, and his skin crawl. And out of nowhere, a massive, bipedal reptile crashed down on the ground in front of him, it's face a stark white. Everything in his body said to run. But he didn't. He faced the creature. Every hit he made on it seemed to do nothing, as he was trying to fight it using what martial arts he knew. If anything..he ended up aching more, and was only barely able to dodge.
However..eventually he became too tired. And then, something happened. The pendant on his bracelet began to glow..and slipped into his skin, right as the creature attempted to bite down on him. Instead of damaging Abel, its teeth ground to a halt against his skin, and he began to feel stronger. The creature backed away, and Abel reached into his pocket. He had taken to carrying a knife around, in spite of how illegal it was. His reasoning was mere intimidation, as the blade was actually purposely blunted. But when he opened it..his thought was that it would be sharp. And when he attempted to cut it, it did indeed do so. Once it faced real damage, the creature ran away, and Abel fell to his knees, exhausted from the exertion. And just like that, his pendant was back in its place, like it had never even moved.
It has now been a year since the day he encountered that creature. And in revelation of things like that existing, Abel has been doing many different kinds of research. What has been happening to him defies science..so he turned to the one place he had never had any particular faith in. The spiritual. Finding out what is going on to him has become a quest of sorts. Finding out what this power of his is, what other strange things exist..and to properly protect others, rather than just interfering with what was happening to them? Those became his goals. Abel's life has shifted in a way that cannot be changed. Now, it is merely time to see where this path will take him.
