Perhaps he'd been too transparent.
It wasn't a regret that he often had, but he felt it more than ever now. Just a month or two ago and he could've counted the list of people who even knew the first thing about him on one hand. Mother and possibly father. Yet now, that meager number had grown substantially.
Abel Bayard.
It certainly hadn't taken that Fullbringer long to make Fionn spill the beans. Just a short conversation and a piercing gaze and Fionn had dropped his veil. Sure, he hadn't been completely truthful with him - but now he knew his name, 'occupation' so to say, e-mail, nature as a Quincy, and more.
Perhaps it'd been the man's position as a newborn to the spiritual scene. Maybe it was how much he reminded Fionn of himself. Either way, he'd been far more open with him than intended.
He had gained an acquaintance at the least. However much that meant these days.
A bead of moisture rolled over Fionn's fingers. He'd long since drained the now-empty glass of Coke he was holding, but something compelled him to keep his hand wrapped around it. He was sitting in a metal chair outside a sandwich store. Oasis Sandwich Bar.
He'd been here before, many times when he was younger. It'd even been the location of his first date. Emerald eyes that fell from his gaze across the road to the ring on his finger were the only indication of the turmoil he felt inside. It was a simple ring. A titanium band with a bit of glass in the middle that shone through to some blue celtic artwork. If one looked carefully though, they could see a faint vertical that proved it was just paper under there. Since he'd grown, it had became too small for his right ring finger so he started wearing it on his right pinky.
It had been a gift from his first girlfriend.
Essa. Sweet, sweet Essa.
She had been beautiful in his eyes. Long red hair and pale white skin. Like strawberries in vanilla ice cream, he thought, she tasted so sweet.
She still did he reckoned. He was sure of it actually, unless his eyes were lying to him. If they were, it wouldn't be the first time. Every fiber of his body lived on lies.
Raising his head, he looked across the street to the adjacent sandwich shop. There she was. Just as beautiful as he remembered, if not more. At least from behind, as her back was to Fionn. In front of her was a new man, though he looked rather similar to Fionn. Pale skin and red hair with bright green eyes.
The aches in his heart weren't a matter of jealously at this point. It'd been nearly 6 years at this point, not to mention it ended because he had hit her. It would be wholly unreasonable to assume she'd 'wait' for him. In any sense of the word.
And he didn't want her to wait anyway. He'd long since left the island, off to do 'better' things. Now, he wasn't quite so sure that that's what he had done. Perhaps it was more akin to running away. Running away from the only place and people that could really hurt him.
Yet it still hurt. It had been the only real relationship Fionn had ever had. The only one that had meant something to him.
Adjusting in his chair, he pulled his phone from his pocket. It was hooked up to some simple black earbuds. He tapped next on his playlist, bringing up the next song - Ed Sheeran's Happier.
He listened motionlessly for a minute or two, in an almost cathartic lull.
'Walking down 29th and Park
I saw you in another's arms'
'I saw that both your smiles were twice as wide as ours
Yeah, you look happier, you do'
Head lulling to the side, against the wall his table was pushed against, Fionn's consciousness retreated into his mind as he fell asleep.
'Ain't nobody hurt you like I hurt you
But ain't nobody need you like I do
I know that there's others that deserve you
But my darling, I am still in love with you'
