It was so hot. God, it was so, freaking, hot. It was unbearably hot … although she should have expected as much, it was the middle of August after all and summer vacation was drawing close.
The lesson dragged by slowly, lazily with the teacher grumpily blathering on about atomic structure and the valency of elements. Chemistry was a lesson she failed to understand and a topic that persistently evaded her. She placed her elbows gingerly on the smooth table top, leaning slightly forward but not quite in a manner that suggested laziness or akin to slouching. She was just bored … although she shouldn’t have been, it gave teachers the wrong impression in class and the last thing she wanted was for her teacher to assume she was a slacker. Her neighbour had already fallen victim to sleep and lay sprawled over her desk, snoring gently. It was a wonder the teacher had yet to note that she had lost about half the class’s attention (maybe it was better that way from the students’ point of view for said chemistry teacher was notorious for her punishments and verbal insults). The fat lady at the front of the class stretched her obese frame out, her glasses sliding down her nose as she performed the action. Akemi sighed. She had better things to do, much much better things to do. Big!, for instance she thought bitterly, and a variety of other Korean Dramas.
She glanced down at the open notebook that lay on her desk, ashamed to see that it was painfully blank. She hadn’t intended to dream so much … she normally didn’t even daydream. This incident would be a lone one, she weakly promised herself although in her hearts of hearts she knew—and was embarrassed to admit—that she would probably go back to drifting off and not fare as well as she would have liked to in this class. She straightened up as she felt the teacher’s sharp gaze land somewhere in her general direction. She gently nudged the girl sitting beside her, as if subtly urging her to wake up. Akemi could not see her chemistry teacher letting this slide, if she noticed it to begin with, that was. The girl murmured something blearily and the brunette poked her slightly harder now.
“Nngh …â€
“Takatsuki-san should wake up.†Akemi murmured quietly. At her gentle demand, the girl sat up and rubbed her eyes, narrowly avoiding being severely admonished by the teacher. Akemi then turned away, squinting against the pale sunlight that was streaming in through the window beside her. Truth to be told, she was desperate for this lesson to come to an end but there was a good forty-five minutes until that would happen. At the end of today, they were to be visited by a ‘mentor’—someone from Tokyo University was coming to see them and help them with the transition between highschool and university. Putting together a good application, examination stress relievers—that sort of thing. She was actually somewhat eager to meet this person—they had not been given details about this person. Her excitement was partly due to her desire to know more about life in university and also to know how hard it was in comparison to high school. Maybe it was somewhat silly of her, but she did want to be the best she possibly could be … and from what she had heard from her seniors, university preparation was, by no means a breeze.
A knock sounded on the door and the teacher gave the person permission to enter.

OOC: Sorry, bad opener, but it's late and I wanted to get this up ...
