Ryutai sat, picking at a loose thread on the end of his belt. It wasn't like him to be nervous, but it had been a long time since he had truly belonged anywhere. This waiting is excruciating Ryutai thought. Earlier that week, Ryutai had received a message saying that his application for the second division had been accepted, and he was to officially meet the Lieutenant and discuss his placement in the Second Division. The word “official” made his stomach churn. “Official” meant bureaucracy and bureaucracy meant rigid structure and process. Commands and commanders: Ryutai understood its necessity but never did have the capacity to appreciate it.
The nigh empty room he sat in exemplified the utilitarian aspect of the division he was about to join; Furnished only with several cushions and a small table, the room was almost oppressive. The absence of Hakumei's presence did nothing to ease the tension either. Ryutai wisely chose to leave Hakumei behind as it is disrespectful and, to the best of his knowledge, illegal to carry a Zanpakuto in the Seireitei proper. Even so, Ryutai wished she were with him.
Still pulling at the loose thread of his belt, Ryutai considered what he knew about the second division. A friend of his in the Seireitei had spoken very highly of the Lieutenant and her captain. Ryutai was told that the division itself was the best place for him to test his skill. Aside form what his friend told him, however, he knew next to nothing about the division. It was a simple matter to understand that the Second Division was the division that carried out the covert operations and assassinations required by the Seireitei, but, to know more than that, one has to actually be part of the operations. I suppose that's why I'm here, isn't it?
