Kyousuke first met Haruna Kotegawa right after her graduation from the Academy and subsequent placement in the Fourth Division. He had himself been freshly promoted to fifth seat a week or so before, and the captain had ordered him to show the new girl the ropes. The job of giving the grand tour was typically reserved for junior seated officers, and though Kyousuke himself hadn't been a member of the Fourth for very long, he had learned the ins and outs of the division fairly quickly. Kotegawa's reputation as an ice queen had already then begun to form, and the rumors of her cold rejections in the Academy had spread quickly. She was beautiful—long dark hair, large brown eyes, slim, feminine and graceful. She was most definitely not a typical candidate for the Fourth, and Kyousuke's first reaction upon meeting her was indeed one of surprise.
Her attitude did not suggest "ice queen" the same way he had imagined, that was perhaps the biggest shock. She seemed eager, bubbling with excitement and above all, she was proud to have been placed in the Research and Development division. The Fourth had never been known for the pride its members felt for being a part of it, and the concept was alien even to Kyousuke. Still, he had his orders, and he showed her the inner workings of their division, answering her many questions as best he could and masterfully evading any and all personal questions she posed.
The orders to have Kotegawa accompany Kyousuke on an intelligence-gathering assignment were unexpected. Kyousuke more often than not worked alone, and the idea that Kotegawa was being groomed for Fourth Division intelligence-gathering seemed unlikely. Kyousuke had to wonder what the purpose of it was, but then again, the captain of his new division had shown before that he was capable of acting without purpose or intent—he was most likely sending Kotegawa with Kyousuke on a playful whim. The only real question was which newcomer he was screwing with.
The assignment was nothing out of the ordinary, a routine check on some of the problematic areas in Karakura, with a cursory scan for Hueco Mundo involvement. Thankfully, Kyousuke wasn't counting on having to draw his sword, let alone using it—Kotegawa didn't seem like she'd be too comfortable wielding hers either. As they stepped out of the Senkaimon into the night sky above Karakura town, Kotegawa was idly chatting about some new project she had been working in back at the lab complex, and Kyousuke turned to her, putting a finger on his lips. She fell silent, and Kyousuke spoke. "Listen carefully, Kotegawa. Out here, you are my responsibility and subordinate. You will do what I tell you and you will not question any orders I give you. Understand?"
She nodded, not saying anything.
"Good. I don't want to have to explain to either the captain or the lieutenant how their newest recruit ended up cut in two by a stray Hollow. Do what I say and we'll both make it home safe and sound just in time for dinner." He paused for a moment as he looked her up and down, then met her eye again, the faintest hint of a twinkle behind his glasses. "How's your shunpo?"
Moments later, they were zipping through the chilly air, their hair whipping at the wind that tore through it as they flash-stepped across the sky. Kotegawa wasn't half bad; she was able to keep up with Kyousuke without too much trouble, and Kyousuke was widely regarded as quite a competent user of shunpo. They didn't speak, flitting from rooftop to rooftop in silence, eyes scanning the streets below. The night seemed quiet enough, and just as Kyousuke was considering returning to Soul Society, something caught his eye. He signaled to Kotegawa to stop and they alighted on a tall brick building not far from the park. A flickering light hung in mid-air far below at street level at the mouth of an alley, the bluish tinge alluring in the most peculiar way. The urge to float down and touch it was overpowering, but Kyousuke remained still, fighting the draw of it. Something was not quite right. Beside him, it seemed as though Kotegawa was unable to withstand the sensation, and she began to move towered it, a soft murmur creeping between her lips as she passed Kyousuke.
"It's beautiful," she said softly as she stepped off the roof and began to drift towered at it. Alarm bells were going off at the back of Kyousuke's mind, but the light was so soothing, so calming. Balm for the soul—and yet the feeling of something being amiss remained, suppressed by the beauty of the light, but there all the same.
Kotegawa had already closed half the distance, and Kyousuke watched her, transfixed. His gaze shifted past her to the alley, and with horror he noticed the looming figure within, the faintest hint of a stem connecting it to the shimmering light. It was a massive Hollow, its mask a twisted visage of hunger, rows upon rows of needle-like teeth open in a gaping maw. It rested lazily on it's lizardlike haunches as Kotegawa, still transfixed by the light, drifted ever closer. The sight of the Hollow shook Kyousuke out of the lull, and he immediately drew Kannaduki and flash-stepped past Kotegawa, slicing the light off the stem. The Hollow shrieked in pain as the light fell and faded, and Kotegawa instantly snapped out of her trance, looking bewildered for a moment before the sight of the hollow registered.
The Hollow, clearly furious at the loss of its bait, roared at Kyousuke before it lunged, mouth open wide, razorlike fangs threatening to impale him. He dodged to the side, realizing a moment too late that it put Kotegawa directly in harm's way. Thankfully, she reacted quickly enough to move, but the Hollow's outstretched leg managed to clip her in passing, sending her sprawling into the empty street. It landed and rounded on her as she scrambled to get to her feet, but by then Kyousuke was on it, swinging Kannaduki's short blade at its teeth, hoping to shatter them. They collided with a ring of steel on steel, not even leaving so much as a mark on the Hollow's teeth, and the beast countered with a wide swipe of the tail that caught Kyousuke in the ribs, winding him and sending him through a plate glass display window. Covered in glass, he rose slowly, wincing at the sharp pain in his torso and gasping for breath. He was probably going to have to pay a visit to the Third Division when he made it back to Seireitei, it felt like a few of his ribs were broken.
Kotegawa had by now managed to draw her sword, and was holding it awkwardly in front of her, as if its mere presence would ward off the Hollow. She clearly had no idea how to use it, and she was shaking, but the Hollow seemed to have forgotten about her for the moment.
The tail had caught Kyousuke off guard, but he wouldn't be making any more mistakes. His vision blurred as he launched himself toward the Hollow, this time he was going to leave a mark. He burst out of the shop, ready to swing once again, and he released Kannaduki mid-air with a soft-spoken command, voice strained by the painful sensation of his broken ribs. He bore down on the Hollow, his swing multiplied by the force of his Shikai—this time shattering the frontmost teeth. The tail whipped out once again, but Kyousuke was ready for it. He caught it with his foot, using the momentum to launch himself high above the Hollow's head. He reversed his grip on Kannaduki, and put all his weight into the downwards stabbing motion at the Hollow's forehead. Magnified, it easily punched through the mask with a crunch, and the Hollow shrieked one last time before dissipating. Clutching his ribs, Kyousuke padded toward Kotegawa, who had collapsed to her knees in relief. "You alright?" he asked her through gritted teeth.
"I—I think so," she stammered. "You're hurt."
"It's not so bad. We should get back to Soul Society."
"I'm sorry for not helping out, I... I don't know what happened. You saved me."
She got to her feet as Kyousuke sunk his zanpakuto into the air in front of him, opening their passage back to Seireitei. "Don't worry about it, Kotegawa," he replied as the doors slid open, spilling light into the dark street.
"No, I mean it. Thank you for saving my life, Tsukimiya." She stood on her toes and leaned in, planting a single kiss on his cheek. "You can call me Haruna."
He turned his head to look at her briefly, and for a moment his grey eyes met her brown, but he said nothing and stepped into the light, letting it engulf him. Kotegawa followed, her face betraying no emotion as the doors slowly slid closed and faded, leaving the street dark once more.
