Day One
The bright sun shone down upon the landscape. Coating the world in a hue of vibrant colors that could bring an Painter to tears. The emerald headed woman known as Alexandra stood atop the ridge of the valley. Looking down upon a single well concealed village, it had taken her a total of three days to properly locate it. Her eyes were remarkable, but those trained in this particular field were hard to pinpoint. She descended the grassy hill, but not before dodging an arrow that whizzed past her face. She looked down and saw a number of them aiming at her. She reached within her small pack, and pulled out a long strip of black paper. She held it up in the air, and as the sun shone upon it began to glow with a red hue. They slowly lowered their bows, and she proceeded down the path.
A long winding road, that took her nearly thirty minutes to makes it down. She passed through a graveyard of the unmarked. People who tried to enter the open fortress without permission. Poor bastards. These people were the real deal, and even with all her knowledge, they were the only ones who could effectively teach her what she wanted to know. As she entered the seemingly ghost town, she could feel the eyes watching her. She made no attempt to move carelessly. Her life hung in the balance, and even her Intuition would not save her here. There was only so much you could do with brain power alone.
She took a few steps up to the Dojo, and removed her pack and shoes. Pulling the strip from her pack, she moved inside. A tall man, standing six feet four inches tall, towered over her. His skin as light as her own, and his hair as blond and fair a foreigner. She handed him the paper, to which he took and then burned within his grip. She stood perplexed. She could not deduce the source of the power. Not immediately. It had been too brief, to short of a time...perhaps her eyes had a limit. No, she just didn't rely on them like this. She needed to. This place would become her resting place if she took a wrong step.
"Now, we'll being the preliminary training." He spoke in a calm and melodious tone. A smile lined his lips, but it wasn't one of glee. It was that of expecting her to die. His intent was not to kill her, but the training she would endure would be one to try her will and strength. "But...the training here will be rather harsh. Many souls have been crushed by it. Try not to run away, okay?" Run away? She noted the sheer amount of archers they had in this village. Even if she wanted to, she had no choice. "I do not plan on retreating now." He smirked a bit more. "Fantastic! This training may be harsh, but if, and when you're able to complete it...you will be given all the tools as well as the qualifications to be Elite students of the Iga School."
"What kind of training is this?" Her question was justified, but his laughter made her question whether she should have inquired. "It's very simple, really." He stepped into the main floor of the Dojo and grabbed two wooden swords. "Using this wooden practice sword...land a single strike against me." She looked at him. His body was solid. He had at least ten years of viable combat experience, and probably more from studying. She had no hope of doing this...she would die before landing a blow on him. "Do not worry, I will not fully attack you." That made it even more confusing. His objective wasn't his safety. He aimed to teach her something already. This wasn't a test, it was a lesson. She stepped into the Dojo as well and took the sword from the bin. She held it in her hands. She had seen enough sword displays to emulate them.
She held it within her hands, and then launched herself forward. His first thought was to be impressed. Her speed was faster than the average human, but in this world, she was weak. He gathered that she at least had the foundation to build upon. So in that regard, she passed the first test. Alex held the sword over her right shoulder, three steps from him, she dropped her arms to her waist, twisted her waist, and slung her arm over her head. Her speed in this was incredible as well, but again slow in. She was watching his muscles, searching for an indication of movement. But before she realized it, he had already evaded her attack. 'He evaded me so easily. He's not an ordinary member. He's either an Elite, or worse...the head.' She planted her right foot and twisted her body to the left, using the momentum of the sword to propel it once again. But the result was the same, by the time her blade met him...he was gone. That's when she felt it.
The wooden sword lightly smack upon her skull. She immediately dropped her sword and grasped her head. The pain was sharp and throbbed. This pattern of attack and failure proceeded for nearly three hours before Alex collapsed from exhaustion. She lay upon the tatami staring up at the ceiling, her chest heaving up and down grasping for her. 'How!? I can't keep up with his movements, no matter what I do. I always lose sight of him. Even if there was another person here, I doubt the outcome would change. The gap is just too great.' She heard footsteps at her head, and she looked up at him. He began to laugh, and then knelt down near her. "As I thought, there is a fatal flaw in your combat prowess. For starters, you lack any whatsoever. No structure, your executions are beautiful, but they are merely imitations nothing more. As you lost to me over and over, I bet you felt like I got into range before you even knew it. You feel as if you are completely overwhelmed, correct?" She wasn't irritated, but he had a bluntness to his wording. "How did you..."
He interrupted her, clearly he knew what she was thinking. "I figured that out. Because you are completely and utterly unable to feel my presence."
She didn't understand. Was he referring to sensing his spiritual pressure? "You'll never catch me chasing after my physical body. You have to see my presence and instantly perceive my movements. You can not sense mine, but I can sense yours. That is why your attacks missed, and you ended up taking mine. You must acquire this skill or you will never hope to touch me." She blinked. She had to acquire this skill of sensing. Was it as easy as he was making it seem, or was it a facade? "74 days...that is the fastest time anyone has completed this trial. Where will you stand? Rest, we'll begin again tomorrow." She was led to a small home at the corner of the village. Her things had been collected and brought her and there was even a bath just out back. She stripped down and assessed her several bruises. She had been through the mill, but even still she was excited. The data she would collect here, would be monumental. She stepped into the bath, and relaxed her crying muscles. A sinister smile lit her lips as she let loose a light laugh. Her eyes rose skyward, and she reached for the stars. This was all for the purpose of attainment. She would not be denied.
