“You said something about breakfast,” he said, entirely distracted by the crowds that flowed past them. The street was entirely stone, lined with equally gray and drab buildings. Around them passed a sea of black, dotted only by the colors of hair or the occasional bright eyes. Some smiled, some scowled. Others were tall, short, lean, fat, and a few were even staring at the pair of young men as they made their way casually through the sunbaked streets of Second Division. Behind them was a path that would eventually lead to the Command Annex—a pride of Tsukimiya’s—and in front of them was the rest of the military headquarters known as Seireitei.
“No, really; first thing on the list. Traveling makes me hungry,” he added, laughing. He felt odd, standing here. Black hair, a soft face, and he looked even skinnier than usual to others. A simple illusion, though the clothes were real. At his side hung his wakazashi, now encased in a sea foam green scabbard and not nearly as black. Even the hilt was a similar shade, wrapped in colorful fiber. The amount of attention such an unknown like him gained from walking side-by-side with the Captain of the Second was…unnerving, but exactly what he wanted.
“This certainly qualifies.”
Nods were shared at passerby, young men and women of all sorts. Of course, looks were deceiving. Right now he knew he could pass for teenager despite being a few centuries into his life. Most of the Shinigami that passed by seemed similarly well aged, with only a smattering of middle aged men and women and even fewer with graying hair. Apparently the surge in youth was a present of Gilgamesh, whose policy changes had brought a surge in Shinigami population from Rukongai.
Of course, fatalities during the Academy had also risen. A small price, the pompous king would say. In fact, he was the very reason that Tova was here today under the guise of his effeminate alias. Already he could tell that the attention from men came from mistaking him for a young woman, perhaps one of the Captain’s newest interests. With a lieutenant as supposedly lovely as Kiriko—Tova hadn’t actually met the woman—the rumors about his bachelor status were colorful and varied. Certainly the sight that much of Seireitei was about to behold would send a new string of stories through the ever-active underground network known as gossip. Even the dedicated efforts of those in the Sixth Division couldn’t root out those spies.
“Let’s see if we can avoid Fourth,” he added as they moved a few more paces. The excitement of the situation left him jittery and it was all he could do to steady his arms and legs. To be so buried in enemy territory, with naught but a clever ruse and a change of wardrobe to hide him? Yes, this was certainly one of the riskier things he had attempted. With the Captain’s assistance, though, he was certain that his airtight paperwork would be enough to assuage any confusion. Should anything else of particular interest be observed in him, well…there were remedies for those rumors too.
“Hope I’m not making the ladies jealous.”
