Kiriko looked around the city with a momentary lapse in composure. This was not her first time in the human world, however it was one of her first times in an area as populated as this “New York City” place. It was hard enough understanding all these new technological advances that humanity had made and Kiriko almost wished she had a Fourth Division teammate to help explain exactly what it was she was looking at – but alas, there hadn't been the availability for more than herself on this particular mission. It was something that couldn't easily be handled by the other Divisions since discretion was more important than simply slicing her target to death. It didn't matter though that Kiriko was lost amongst all the glinting skyscrapers and the zipping metal death traps that were called cars because she knew the most basic rule of engagement in the human world – which was don't break stuff.
It didn't matter what was around her, buildings or cement streets or underground levels, none of it could be destroyed. In an area with so many people it would be a real task to deal with humans who'd seen their street suddenly shift as if a bite had been taken out of the concrete or worse case scenario if a human were to be caught in the crossfire and eaten. No, none of that was allowed to happen. And Kiriko didn't have a perfect track record on missions for nothing. At least, that was what she told herself as she looked down upon the millions of people walking around beneath her. How there could even be this many humans was mind boggling...
Closing her eyes Kiriko focused intently on the reiatsu of those around her. It was really weird doing this in the human realm where there were hardly the reassuring presence of strong spirits or Captains nearby like anchors to her senses. Instead it felt like a ghost town, the presence of a few tiny spiritually aware people flickering so weakly that she almost didn't feel them. It certainly didn't help that her reiatsu perception wasn't the most honed skill in her arsenal. Frowning deeply, Kiriko turned her senses outward and concentrated harder. A ripple appeared on the horizon and she jerked out of focus unable to correctly pinpoint the destination but getting a pretty good idea of the direction.
Kiriko looked around once more, feeling for all the world like a ghost that no one could see. It was always so eerie to be in the human world, like she was a passerby or observer who couldn't interact even on a basic level with those around her. Not that Kiriko wanted to deal with humans, they were more trouble than they were worth, but she still hated the feeling of being ignored. There was a cold pressure at her side and she looked down to see Aneue vibrating slightly, the deathly rattle of bone on bone filling her ears.
Kiriko frowned even deeper, trying to cut off that irksome noise before it got to her too much. She refused to touch the zanpakuto and give in to Aneue's desire. If Kiriko acknowledged that she needed Aneue, that she wasn't alone here because of Aneue's presence, then it would be that much harder to beat back the smug thoughts of the sword later on. And she was not going to call on Aneue for this fight. The sword spirit was better left sheathed for all eternity if Kiriko had her choice on the matter. In response to that thought there was a momentary silence, as if she'd actually hurt Aneue's feelings. Kiriko knew better than to trust that though, Aneue was a consummate liar and she had no reason to feel bad about what she thought in her own damn head!
Coward.
The word pierced her thoughts like the sharpest of swords. Slicing right to her heart. Letting out a puff of breath, Kiriko shook her head forcefully. Just ignore her. Ignore her. That was what Kiriko told herself, though the word continued to repeat along with the velvet-smooth laughter that always accompanied Aneue's barbs. Coward. Coward. Coward. The word followed her like a shadow, and Kiriko took off with a burst of speed, racing across the sky as she tried to outrun her zanpakuto spirit's ugly commentary. Just wait Hollow, when I catch up to you you won't even know what hit you. Coward am I? We'll see about that!
