So, I'll just put the main question up top, and my musings below. Are shinigami purifying hollows the hard way?
This question came to me while I was dealing with some fire wood that my father ordered some time yesterday. I was listening to some j-rock for white noise, and my thoughts turned towards bleach. Specifically, the shinigami.
Now, the shinigami have, technically, two jobs. Maintain the balance of souls, and pass on souls that ot stuck in the human world. This includes both plusses and hollows. This second job is done through the use of a zanpakutou, a soul cutting sword. It can either be done by 1) slicing and killing the soul with the sword, commonly seen with hollows or 2) stamping the soul in the head with the pommel of the sword, commonly seen with plusses.
However, there are no rules as far as I can tell stating one method must be used specifically for one type of trapped soul. Nor is there any mention of consent being required. If the soul truly wanted to pass on, it would already be in rukongai.
So if you don't need consent and (presumably) either method works, why spend the time and energy actually fighting hollows? If shinigami were trained with a focus on speed, they could zip up, stamp the hollow, and be done with it with much less collateral damage than taking the time to slice the damn things to ribbons.

Discuss if you like. And no blaming kubo. We all know he's thick, so that's just a cop out.
Also, I'll probably occasionally post more random questions like the above or snippets of poetry. Poetry can come on request, or just randomly when something cool or noteworthy happens in my life. Like a house catching fire in the subdivision next to mine.
