Hokkaido, Soya Subprefecture
He barely recognized it the first time he came home. His memories of his human life were always foggy and yet the surrounding landscape seemed to confirm it. The tall foreboding mountains that held the sky in place. Their skin gleamed a brilliant orange as the snow reflected the setting sun's rays. The small village which he was born in had changed despite the world not. No more were the small wooden huts, nor did bears prowl the surroundings searching for the scraps that the children threw out to feed them. Now tarmac blanketed the earth and small concrete homes stood sparsely over their wooden ancestors. Despite the image being so alien Naoko couldn't help but feel somewhat at home. At least the world prepared him for the sight, covering the village in a blanket of snow so that it might not come as such a shock to be changed. There was a nostalgia in the snow where they would frolic and play then run to their homes or the forge to warm themselves up. As if lost in a vision the old man wandered through the snowy tundra following in footsteps centuries old. He was dressed warm, wearing the gigai that all shinigami were assigned to wear.
His gigai blocked out most of the cold air that threatened to freeze him on the spot. It was only his legs, damp with snow dew that shivered ever so slightly as he plowed on through the white powder. His fine black shoes were ruined, as were is suit pants with the white pinstripe. The bottom of his dark beige trench coat looked hazelnut brown after the amount of water it had collected. Yuki and Ame always loved the snow and so he wore his sword belt lower than usual so that their sheaths could trace lines as he walked. The image always conjured up the idea of children running their hands through water on a boat. It made him smile as he heard their etherial voices giggle and laugh as they danced and played amongst their world. With every other step he sent his mind to them and danced among the snowflakes and the shadows of the dancing bears. They never held the hatred that they seemed to hold when it snowed, instead of violently throwing themselves in the inner world they moved slowly as if trying to not let a flake land on them. It was a peculiar phenomenon, one which Naoko never questioned and instead allowed it to carry on in peace.
'Pa where was your house?!'
'Why are you asking him? None of us can remember!'
'Can tooo! He remembered where the village was? So why not the house!'
'That is such a dumb question'
'It's only dumb because you can't~re~mem~beeer!'
'Wha....NEITHER CAN YOU! Paaaa Ame is teasing me again!'
Chuckling to himself Naoko decided to jump in before things got too ugly.
'Ame, leave Yuki alone don't be too mean since she can remember somethings and you can't! Need I remind you of how you forgot my name?'
Yuki and Naoko burst into laughter as the younger bear cub spirit went quiet with embarrassment. A shift of weight happened with Ame's blade delving deeper in the snow so as not to hear the pair laugh at him. Smiling the shinigami walked back on to the road and walked through the closed high-street. Metal shutters were pulled down blocking the view of the wares but at least their neon signs were lit up. A grocery store over there, a electronics store had just opened and even their own mini cinema seemed to be in place. Such was the wonders of the technological advancement of this age. Despite the village being in the middle of nowhere it still surprised Naoko that it was in full bloom wherever he went.
'Pa look!'
Far in the distance Naoko's eyes picked up on a small advertisement board. Walking to it, the image upon became clearer and clearer. It was advertising the discovery of part of his village! The snow and ice had perfectly kept the forge intact and it was now open to the public. With a sudden burst of energy the old man leapt high into the sky.
'What if someone saw!'
'Sometimes you have to take risks!'
It was all he could think of as the sun's descent quickened into night. Leaping from roof to roof the shinigami's one goal was to see this piece of home. He knew that he would never fully remember the place that held his heart but he still wanted to try. Following the buildings till they stopped he dropped down to the road and ran along its twists and curves. Downhill he went, picking up speed as the world became a screen of white his eyes saw it in the distance the small wooden hut surrounded by a fence. Stopping in his tracks was all Naoko could do as he marveled at the history before him. Just as he was about to leap down the hill, a movement caught his eye.
'Pa there is someone over there! Act natural!'
Cursing the person who forced him to act like a normal human, Naoko slowly walked down the hill and towards the 600 year old forge that was once his home. Hand's fumbling in his pockets he pulled out a cigarette and tried to light it, hoping to calm his nerves as he inched closer. The blasted thing wouldn't start, the moist air must have gotten to the flint. Looking around the building Naoko called out to the person he saw earlier.
"Hello? Is anyone there? I was hoping for a light if you had one?"
