you say that but it's got everything you could ever want:
private messaging multiple channels access from pretty much anything with a processor via both web and dedicated programs free varied permission tiers protected nicknames via nickserv registration embeddable client /me etc
"It's old" isn't valid criticism. "It's difficult for the inexperienced to get used to" certainly is, and given the amount of "LOL THE SITE IS SO DIFFERENT HOW DO I LOG IN???" we've had maybe it's a sign that something as challenging as /nickserv register isn't a good idea to push onto the denizens of BG

While I understand your sales pitch was likely not pointed at me, I'd just like to throw out that I was genuine in my thanks. I love the shit out of IRC and would use it again in a heartbeat.
It does, in fact, have everything you want to manage quick communication in a geographically diverse setting with no need for anything more than text.
CSS Layout specifically the position property. I'd like that changed to a fixed position. That way I can have multiple windows opened without having the text smashed into an unreadable column of characters. Especially since this site places recent posts at the bottom of the reply screen.
Elaborate that first bit. I've set the minimum width of the board wrapper to 650px in the default skin—even if you shrink the window further than that the site won't scale with it past that point. I'm going to look into reversing the order of the posts visible in the reply view.
As for other things (default skin):
Word counter is now floated to the left
Quick reply submit button is now back to being on the right, thank god
Bottom pagination controls have returned now that I fixed how fucking ugly they were
posts are now Justified

*ahem* I see what you did now. So my issue is the minimum width. So the moment the browser begins to shrink, the board resizes to accommodate by smashing the text box into a smaller view range. This happens until you hit the minimum width you set. On forums like this where text is simple and easy to view it's not much of an issue, but in full threads and applications it smashes the text box into a literal column of words. I guess what I'm asking is to have the minimum set higher to a set size.
My answer is no, but I have a pretty good reason to decline your request.
As it stands, the most popular sub-1080p monitor size in use today is 1366×768, by quite a large margin. If we disregard for a moment that a 1080p screen (or larger) can very comfortably fit up to three BG windows that remain perfectly legible (with room for a little wider windows if you like), as seen below (1920 pixels wide):
And instead focus on the smaller size, 1366 pixels wide, then the current width lets you have two min-width BG windows open simultaneously with ease, shown here:
Decades of newspapers in print have shown us that columns are easy for the eye to follow, particularly when special care is taken in typeface and spacing choices. The current solution caters to the largest amount of users by quite a fair margin (roughly 80% of the total).
I can meet you half-way and provide the necessary CSS to override this for those with outlier screen resolutions, of course:
#wrapper { min-width: 800px !important; }
Change the number to suit your tastes with your CSS override of choice. I suggest Stylebot if you're on Chrome, there's an existing guide here.

Oh, also, this might be a flaw in my intelligence or the site, but why is it so hard to actually preview a post now? I feel like we could do it a few days ago, but now it won't let me.
I do not mean to be bothersome, but I was wondering if it would be at all possible to get the recent replies tracker back on the side of the forum? Like what there was on the original site, where it listed the last ~10 or so threads that something new happened in. It is entirely fine if not, however, and I am aware that there is a lot you are still doing in adjusting to a new site.
We're singing I believe that lovers should be chained together and thrown into a fire with their songs and letters, and left there to burn. Left there to burn in their arrogance.
Does the same job but takes less (to no) space for those who don't want the whole sidebar covered in that. Or for those who don't want a sidebar at all.
this ain't for the best my reputation's never been worse, so you must like me for me we can't make any promises now, can we, babe?

Alright, thank you.

it occurs to me that part of your problem was that the sidebar was taking up a great deal of space for you (I have mine hidden via my browser). In order to address this, I've had to fix up a bit of a homebrew solution for hiding the sidebar on all pages except the main page on the default skin. This should help a lot.
If anyone notices any weird behavior that might stem from this, please post.
Cheshire, we've tried getting a plugin that does that but it doesn't seem to be anything that the software supports out of the box. In the meantime, you can use the link at the bottom as suggested, or use the Quicklook page (linked at the top next to your PM inbox) for a similar feature.
Also, Tova fixed the word counter—it now recognizes typographically correct apostrophes and thousands grouping separators without treating them as word breaks:
Tova’s a loser now counts as three words instead of four and
1,000,000 now counts as one word instead of three. 1, 000, 000 still counts as three words.

The same could be accomplished with a pinned thread somewhere, no doubt.

In light of the popularity of the IRC channel and that we don't want to split the community between multiple platforms, we probably won't be re-enabling the Shoutbox.
If enough people strongly disagree with this sentiment, though, please do speak up.

I like the Shoutbox.
Things it does that the IRC doesn't:
>provide an easy, obvious way for guests to communicate with members upon arriving at the site >hook people into spending more time on the site from any page >provide a chat for people who are technology illiterate
That first one's the most important, in my opinion. If it's not too much of a hassle to keep, I'd keep it. That or have an IRC window open on the homepage in the same way.
