It was after the food, and light conversation-- the sun was starting to set, and Erek was sitting out on the balcony connected to Freyleif's room looking out over the forestry-- it was nice out here. He'd thought it when he first came here too, but the nature that surrounded them in this place was comforting, full of lush life-- it was odd. The crimson and orange light that bathed the air around them, decorating the sky in brilliant shifting hues was a pleasant contrast against the deep green foliage. He'd intended to leave by now-- but he didn't mind lingering a bit since she still seemed to want to talk.
Slowly, he shifted his position on his chair, his ankles crossed slightly as he rested his chin in his palm-- looking out over the sky quietly.
"The sky's really clear," he stated-- more as an idle thought than anything else. He enjoyed the star's, there were times when it had been his only source of entertainment, sitting in the sand waiting for time to pass for his shift on his watch to be over as the stars shone above them. He used to trace them, there was obviously the normal designed-- the Big Dipper, Polarstern, Orion, but it was enjoyable creating his own designs. Though he doubted any of them were really that great-- usually it was something simple like a battlefield painting he had seen, or a knight, a dog-- things like that. Occasionally even a firearm if he had enough time to trace each star to shape the different parts of the weapon in question.
Briefly, he glanced down from the sky that hadn't quite begun to show its stars as he arched a brow toward Frey-- briefly pondering if she even knew the constellations, there were such large gaps in her education that he pondered what she knew and what she didn't. Perhaps it was because he had spent all of his life either studying or training-- but he wasn't quite certain what was common knowledge and what wasn't. He knew when it came to some things-- or at least what was socially acceptable, he'd learned that through hit and miss attempts-- but some things she clearly had no idea about.
Such as evolutionary theory-- which seemed entirely odd, since from what he'd studied Hollow were walking evolution bombs-- it seemed odd that she didn't know details regarding the theory since one of their key enemies relied on it. But then she clearly wasn't stupid either-- she learned and adapted any knowledge he shared with her quickly-- as proven by her mastery of her "Blot" in such a short amount of time. Tilting his head a bit, a question suddenly popped up in his mind.
"You didn't really answer me before-- but did you ever go to a normal school, Frey? Or were you home-taught?" he left it vague-- he was fairly certain the second option was more likely-- it would explain the holes in her education. But he also knew that asking anything specific would likely lock him out of anything she may try to share-- gentle probing was the better option when it came to younger people, especially when they were as sensitive and anxious as the little Puffin was-- even if he was building trust with her, he knew all too well they were still most definitely in the early stages of their friendship.
Baby steps-- as with everything.
