and that's what I mean: the only way Hueco Mundo ever wins is through gargantuan asspulls without rhyme, reason, or any kind of plausibility
I'll take my fair share of responsibility for alter Tova but I won't sit here and say that it wasn't just about the biggest asspull deus ex machina this site has ever seen
and the Siege would have had the same result sans character death: Hueco Mundo was thoroughly beaten not because of mitsutaka refusing to give it a fair shot or tokiyo suddenly vanishing from a thread
the hollows gave it their best, and their best was nowhere near enough: it never is

I'm glad that the whole, "Will kill you for being in our thread" business was gone because of that. Seriously killed the fun of having a character that was just going to be offed (or threatened to be offed) within only a few group posts. And that I missed out on the Seige, sounds like it sucked.
Still this site only got more awesome because of the fallout of that. So silver linings right?

no, the siege was in many ways BG at its best
gross incompetence on the part of a few select individuals marred what was otherwise an extremely engrossing display of player agency and the pitting of wills against one another
characters actually acting in character instead of twisting things to their breaking point in order to accommodate some grand scheme

prove to me that this isn't some huge staged event with a predetermined outcome and I'll get excited, artix
prove to me that the people outside the thread with whoever it is you're fighting will have an impact and I'll get excited, artix
prove to me that I, as player and as a character, will be able to look at this afterwards and go "yeah actually that made a lot of sense" and I'll get really fucking excited, artix

He has an idea of what he wants to have happen. Whether or not it happens, on the other hand, is entirely up to others involved.
That said, at some point Kyou, show/make something on how things are supposed to go down. I like organic outcomes and events that have multi-race impact/repercussions and I sure as fuck like responding to shit IC as it comes up.
(My own personal approach is to have an idea/goal of what I want accomplished in the thread. "X and Y need to fight and Z should hopefully result of it at the end. How they get there is up to the players to make happen." and then hope to fuck it goes that way, or, as I've seen happen? Shit goes pear shaped and welp that wasn't in the plan but let's run with it anyways it's more fun.)
I know what my outcomes are, personally. The Hollow VS Shinigami outcome? Fuck if I know.
And it's the first one that I'm excited to see. The whole, "Shini are gods, Hollows always fail unless it's an OOC asspull" thing. Not really buying it. But I'm looking forward to your grand entrance. Although it sucks that there's not alot of good Hollow compared to the army of Shini. Otherwise things'd be a whole lot more fun to watch in that regards.
But yeah, while I'm going to play as Shini. OOC, I don't buy the whole Shini Superiority Complex thing. It's sad we only have two professional Hollow Players.

That's a cool way of looking at it. Is your Substitute Shini going to show up? Or does she not know about it IC yet?
There is a nice, glorious middle ground here between "Everything must be organic, with no pre-plotting and no idea where things end up" and "This thread is by the books" that I enjoy. It comes in the form of, "I think this might happen in this thread, but we'll see." And you go from there. Sometimes you get what you need, sometimes you don't, and sometimes you end up starting a war.
If your character wouldn't do something in character, don't do it. If your character would do something in character, do it. If you have a lot of options (which there tends to be) then pick one or discuss things with your partner. And if your thread ends up going completely off the fucking rails and oh god now Sekai and Obsession are fighting and nobody anticipated this....
Well then you wind up with good times all around. Doesn't mean they didn't have a general gist of the thread going into it, just means that they were very much surprised when characters deviated from the plan- and were willing to let them do exactly that. It's a hell of a lot of fun to do. It's why Takua ever stayed as Primera in the first place, and why the fight I had with Arty afterward might not be the most cinematic because of our lack of planning, but the thread itself still counts as one of my favorites I've ever had.

I'm not going to write a fucking guide on how to stay in-character don't be ridiculous
Just don't play things so safe all the time
Put your characters in situations where you actually have to think real hard about how they would realistically react, and even better if it's a way that you don't necessarily want them to react
these are things that are interesting to read
here, like when I told weylin "hey, I can totally swing you a list of all the vaizards ever, but it's completely up to you to decide how nagisa would use it."
I had no idea if she would give it to tokiyo or burn it at first opportunity
nobody did
she weighed the options in-character and acted in a way which in retrospect makes a lot of fucking sense: nagisa has nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving up such a list, and she knows this
then you've got cuckimus maximus here who decides to have a public execution and invite all the captains and lieutenants
okay
shit kicks off
okay
suddenly everyone's rewriting the (until previously believed inexorable) flow of time in order to better accommodate the original plan, which is for absolutely fucking nothing exciting to happen, apparently
do you see my point? do you see why it's so much more fun, and above all rewarding, to be put in situations where you learn as much about the characters you write as the people reading do?
hollowhazuki was always very adamant about (violently) putting that in kyousuke's head: growth through adversity
and that goes for you as a player, too, not just your character

Yeah I started off just playing around trying to inject a bit of humor and have fun. But then Hazuki had to be actually serious with her Shini Superiority ... Makes me almost happy that I'm going to go Vaizard in my character's future ... and makes things really annoying. There's a huge difference between "I have fun playing as X", and "The otherside are dirty cheaters, my race is the superior race." Kinda really sucks the fun out of trying to have fun with a metathread.

in many ways this but to specify just a tiny bit there's plenty of room for pre-planned "this needs to happen stuff" in private threads
it's fucking encouraged
we're a collaborative writing RP site thing
but don't try to sell me some world-shattering NFL tournament and then hand me a DVD highlight reel of your favorite team's goals
okay this is pretty a bad analogy but
you get the point

every thing since the inception of BG has been stacked shinigami ways.
But that's okay. Obsession made a plot
