This is a thread that I've been planning to make for quite some time, but procrastinated with for various reasons, but after some encouragement from Ladon after helping him, I finally decided to get off my lazy butt and make it. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned that I major in Japanese quite a few times in the IRC and provided simple translations for people even though they haven't asked for it, but I've never really made a post or thread stating this to the public, so here it is!
So! I created this thread for the sole purpose of me (or anyone else with expertise in the field) providing Japanese for people who request it, as the title implies. I've noticed a whole lot of pretty poor Japanese among quite a few users, which is completely understandable, given the fact that it's a difficult language to both translate and understand. It can be very finicky at times, especially when it comes to the usage of particles (this applies mostly to release commands and the likes, which are optional in terms of translating). Other times, it can be rather ambiguous, especially if the phonetics are translated into the incorrect Kanji or the Kanji refers to a rather specific aspect of an English word, for instance, 将来 vs. 未来, which both are translated as "future", but have different contexts. A person jumping on Google Translate to find, say, the name of a Zanpakutou, wouldn't be able to determine the difference between these two when provided with a translation.
That's also one of the reasons why I made this thread, as I've seen quite a bit of Google Translate words in applications, which have a sorry tendency to be absolutely atrocious. I figured that I'd do my part in keeping translations standards up by offering this service to people who are uncertain about their Japanese and don't have anyone else to ask. I do use "anyone" instead of "any means" since online translators have a tendency to even struggle with everyday phrases in most languages, and should not be seen as reliable in the context of creating names and conjugating verbs. It's therefore better to just leave this to a person with some expertise in Japanese, or just knowledge about how to utilize the on'yomi and kun'yomi of Kanji.
While I made this thread in mind that I'll be the only primarily handling it, do note that I am a first-year student and that my knowledge is thus limited at the moment; I am not too experienced with complex sentences yet and if I do provide them, they can be slightly wonky. I therefore welcome other people who have more experience with Japanese to correct me if I hand out some fishy translations, and join in if they feel like they have the time and motivation to provide help. However, I can guarantee that my Japanese will only improve from now on, and as a result, the quality of my translations will probably do so too.
If you want me to provide translations for your second release and such, I am quite open to taking it to PM or another platform if you want it to remain confidential. My lips will be sealed until you are ready to present the request yourself, so this is not an issue. If you otherwise feel more comfortable with a general translations being provided through PM, I am open to that as well.
In addition to Japanese, I can offer Norwegian translations as well, but it's so niche that I doubt it would be of any use to anyone. However, I do also understand old Norse and can provide vaguely broken translations of it if anyone wants that (looking at you @scorchys ). The main goal of this thread will still be Japanese translations, however.
I'd also request that people refrain from posting in this thread with the sole intent of derailing it from its purpose, as I want this to be an asset to the site, even if a minuscule one. (also if this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it!)
With that said, がんばります!
